Should be an interesting season. Predictions given the roster today:

Wins: 84
MVP: Bichette
Playoff result (if any): Miss playoffs
Positive surprise player: Biggio
Negative surprise player: Springer (injuries adding up)
Surprise move: Three months in Atkins is replaced

I don't have a huge expectation of this years team. I think their pitching staff looks great, but the batting looks like a shot in the dark with an assortment of assortments littered throughout. Too many guys are replaceable and particular positions where you should be getting HRs (specifically OF), are spotty on offence. So for those reasons I see them with around 84 wins, missing the wildcard as the other divisional teams get stronger.

I guessed on the button 2 years in a row how many wins, so i hope i am right again because something tells me a few of these guys are motivated like never before.

Im going with 89 wins and 2nd in the AL East.

MVP .....Vlad.

Easy wildcard team.

I'm not as optimistic this year as the past couple. I still think they are, and will be a good team. Strong pitching and defense, middle-ish offense. I think they are the 7th or 8th best team in baseball, but might be the 4th best team in their own division. IMO they'll be in the wild card hunt again. ~90 wins or so.

This could be the last year for the Bo/Vlad based core as well. I think these two have shown they are not cornerstone pieces to build around. They can be decent pieces and parts of a winning team but if you hand out massive deals to them it will hurt you in the long run. I think whatever happens this season, we will see a core shuffling happen. If they are in it all season, it will happen next off season, if they are out of it mid season it will possibly happen at the deadline.

I believe this is a deep team with almost no "passengers" but also no real 6+ fWAR superstars and a whole lot of 1 to 3-4 fWAR type players. That's not a bad thing, but you certainly can't be doling out $300 million+ contracts to 3-4 fWAR players.

If Bo and Vlad were consistently 6+ fWAR superstars this team would be winning division titles instead of fighting for WC berths.

I mostly agree with what you wrote, but I truly think Bo is a very good talent. I don’t think any player is worth the risk of an eight year deal as almost all never live up to it, but if there’s a longer term player on this team, it’s Bo. He’s done far better at his position than I previously gave credit for. Vlad is a long term disaster waiting to happen for a long term deal.

I'm choosing to be optimistic. Last year was a hard lesson for guys like Vlad and Manoah. It looks like they took it to heart and committed in the off-season. I think Vlad playing with less weight/more muscle will be quicker and more able to handle pitches when he gets them. He hit the ball on the ground/at flat launch angles last year because he didn't bend his legs down enough to get the angle of the bat right. That's because of his weight and lack of fitness. If he comes in fit, he could be terrifying again.

Manoah I don't know as much about because it seemed to be mental as much as physical for him, but he looks leaner. He's essentially replacing Ryu, so he doesn't have to be lights out, but he could be a front end of the rotation guy again. Just last off season, people were placing bets on him in the Cy Young race. 1 bad year doesn't mean he's lost all his talent...he just misplaced it for a while. Classic young star mistake to get ahead yourself and think you have it all figured out. He'll be better this year, I have no doubts about it.

I look at the lineup, and I think it will probably be close to last year, but with a better/fitter Vlad, they will score quite a few more runs. The pitching is already good, and may be better than last year with Manoah's return to form. The defense is still shockingly good, even with the loss of a gold glover at 3rd. I think there's plenty of room for optimism here. Plus, they may decide to go out and add a bat throughout the season if there's a need, so you just can't predict how things will turn out.

This isn't even considering the young guys like Schneider, Clement, and Horwitz making a bigger impact on the team as they get used to the Majors. None are blue chippers, but are still gamers none the less. I also think Justin Turner was a sneaky good pick up to DH. Dude has been pretty consistent in his last 3 years.

I say they win 98 games this year. Call it a hunch.

3rd in al east...WC team

Mattingly with a full beard is something to behold.

Obviously the Simpsons episode and the Yankees rules about facial hair, but ever since he stopped playing he's been clean cut too, with FLA and the Dodgers etc.

He even adopted the no beard policy in Florida. Canada has changed him!

That first game with the C-lineup in spring training seemed to be all over the place. Good hitting numbers but pitching, yikes.

On another note, Bellinger signs with the Cubs for 3 years $80M. Far cry from the 8 he was apparently seeking. Boras must be pissed at his least successful off-season. He came ready into the GM meetings with every media metaphor ready to go and clearly has lost some pull based on this years' GM's spending money more wisely (minus LA).
