Gross. I want nothing to do with China or their Olympics.

Canada’s participation will be a disgrace.

Will not watch one minute.

EDIT: By China I mean the Chinese government.

We do or we did. Canada Cup/World Cup. It would be really good now if they hadn't pissed it away. They chose Nagano 98 over World Cup 2000.

The skeptic in me says the PA is calling the leagues bluff. I think deep down inside the league wants exposure to the largest country in the world and are hoping they pony up the cash (or someone else does).

The league would be all-in if they were allowed to then use the images and footage of those games.

The IOC said no.

So I can hardly blame them for saying they arent paying for insurance nor for games missed.

What's the downside for the IOC or IIHF to allow the NHL to use footage or have their branding as part of the tournament? The downside of not having NHL players involved seems obvious, but nothing jumps out at me on the other side of the argument.

I honestly couldn't care less if NHL players go, but clearly having them go benefits the Olympics more than the NHL, the latter of which actually stands to lose out by disrupting the season and teams possibly having their assets harmed.

I have no idea why players would want to go. You are millionaires playing in the best league and you going to go to Covid infested China? Yeah I get the pride of playing for country but not in these circumstances. Bring back the World Cup in 23.

The 26 games are in Milan and the 30 games might be Ukraine. Why do we keeping doing this song and dance with the IOC?

The downside for the IOC is that it waters down the monopoly they have on Olympics footage.

Networks pay a lot of money to be the exclusive broadcaster for their respective countries. If others can provide the footage, the value of the media rights to the Olympics becomes less.

The IOC have traditionally been extremely corrupt. I'd love to see Bettman bend them over as he's in a lot of ways fully in the drivers seat. The Olympics over the past few years seems to have dropped off substantially considering the locations they've put them. Not only time zone, but seemingly questionable places for human right violations/questionable politics. Sucks for the athletes to get caught up in once in a lifetime opportunities, but the IOC is goign to be the IOC.

Didn't get the media rights. Since Korea isn't a massive market that NHL feels will really benefit the NHL due to exposure, they were willing to use this as a tactic to gain rights in future games. Doesn't seem like it's gonna pan out for these upcoming games though.

None. China hosts big events like this to show the world their perfect society. No bad things ever happen in China. The question is, to we want to participate in the show of perfection.

Sounds like the NHL couldn't ignore the publicity from playing in the largest populated country in the world. Frankly, I don't get it. Most of Asia, South America, the Caribbean, Australia, Africa, etc., aren't worth bothering building the game in. The climate is warm and it'll never pick up. What's the point really? Plus in this case there's the social stigma of China not having a good human rights record.

China has a KHL team. Definitely room to grow the game there even if just in the Northern Regions or with the wealthy.
