Holy crap, what was Skinner's ask that led them to "compromise" on $9 million/yr for 8 years with a full NMC???

Skinner is good, but only averages 54 points per full season. That is really underwhelming. He's also never played a playoff game and is 27 years old.

I don't get it...

And some Flames fans seem to think our players should/will take less because they lost in the first round lol

Good lord. 9 million for a player who's career max is 63pts? Brutal. Thank you Skinner for potentially f'ing up Tkachuks contract negotiations. I mean, good for him to get that much. He has the best agent ever. But that's Oileresque.

one of those contracts that are going to kill you. I like Skinner, but in no way, shape or form is he a 8x9 player. If you think Neal, Eriksson and Lucic are boat anchors, wait until you see the final 3 years of that Skinner contract ...

It's not so much that Buffalo spends their money, it's that they spend it going after 2nd tier free agents. I imagine that they are stuck going after those guys instead of the big names in the NHL, but they don't pay them like 2nd tier guys, they pay them like 1st tier guys. Okposo, Moulson, now Skinner, it seems to be a pattern.

That, and they haven't had a really strong goaltender since Ryan Miller left.

Well what would you guys pay a career 30 goal scorer, who just put up 40, in their prime years, going in to UFA? Let’s keep in mind a proven 20 goal scorer, 3 years older James Neal with no proven roster chemistry gets almost $6M per year.

If he goes UFA, the agent isn’t even returning your call unless your number starts with an 8. Are you really gonna let a 40 goal scorer walk over $1mil? Barely 1% of the cap? Buffalo still has $20 million in cap space after this and no other major free agents to worry about. It’s really a no brainer. If he walked on July 1st, they have $30 million to work with, with their number one need being a goal scoring winger.

Oh. So his agent knows where Buffalo's GM buried the bodies....because this is preposterous.

Yeah and Neal has one of the worst contracts in the league.

Skinner has been frequently injured throughout his career, so I feel like the term is gonna be the real killer here.

Skinner is at the tail end of his prime years and heading into the declining years of his career.

It didn't even take one year for Neal's contract to be an albatross.

That being said Buffalo needed to sign Skinner and obviously this is what it took to get it done, it doesn't mean that it is a good contract, Infact with Skinner's inconsistency it will probably look really bad as early as next season.

You mean the small guy who has never scored more than 63 points? $6m/year or so. Heís not just overpaid by a million or so. In my opinion heís overpaid by $2.5-$3m/year.

Nealís contract sucks now but please continue to try and argue that at the time he didnít get about what he was worth. Yeah, too bad he doesnít have chemistry here but Treliving doesnít own a crystal ball.

Most UFA's that sign 8 year contracts will stink in then last 3 years of that contract.

It's the price for playing in a cap world.

He's pretty young, it's not a certainly he'll regresses as quick as you think, but that's the choice for signing UFA's.

It would be nice to see in the next CBA max contract lengths get shortened again to 5 or 6 years

He's a four time 30 goal scorer and if he doesn't get 30 he will be close. He's actually played 70+ games every season since 2014 so maybe some of the concussion issues are behind him but the term scares me with his concussion history as well as the fact he's a goals or nothing type of player.

Yeah you let him test the market.

I really like Jeff Skinner... but they really got no discount for being the only team that can give him 8 years.

Thatís now the 16th biggest contract in the NHL - in line with Benn, Kucherov, and Stone. Heís not at that level of player IMO, has a rough injury history, and you are overpaid based on a career season.

His Career GPG average (0.37 GPG) is really similar to Kane and Pacioretty who recently signed for a $7M cap hit - is he really worth $2M than those guys especially on an 8 year term.

If they could have got him for 5 years at $9M and overpaid to keep the term down thatís fine but to give him that overpay at full term is crazy.

Granted Eichel and Skinner were great together last year...but are they $19M of your cap hit great?
