It's hard to believe that any team scouted Shinkaruk more than the Flames, considering his close proximity (and he's often at WinSport himself).

Many people believed that the Flames were very high on Hunter. They had a good look at him. He's Calgarian (and the Flames have made it their duty to acquire all the Calgarians) and they still didn't pick him when people thought he would be picked 8-10 spots before.

That says a lot to me. Either the Flames saw something they really did not like, or Hunter flat out said "don't draft me". I thought it could have been that the Flames were satisfied with Baertschi and Gaudreau on the LW (as smaller players themselves), but then we go out and draft 5'11" Klimchuk at 28, so that theory doesn't really work

The fan did an interview with the three Calgary products that could possibly be selected in the first round. Morrissey, Shinkaruk, and Klimchuk. If I remember correctly Shin was the only guy that hadn't been interviewed by the Flames. Meanwhile the Flames did second interviews for four guys. Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk, and Petan. Petan was likely the back-up option of Poirier or Klimchuk weren't available.

Right or wrong I think the Flames got their guys. I also don't think it mattered how far Shin fell. For whatever reason the Flames didn't want him.

Its a little to bad we traded away our second round pick as we could have had Petan with that selection.

Poirier has tons more upside than Shinkaruk. Asides from the obvious skating and gritty forechecking I think Emile has hands and shooting that is very comparable to Hunter. Its a no brainer for me why they took Emile and I just wish we would have kept our 2nd rounder last year because it was a deep draft in which a lot of highly rated prospects fell.

I really like this pick. Shows NHL level tenacity and jam. Ceiling is like an Alex Burrows, those players are immensely valuable in the second season.

Minus the biting, diving, and general ######-baggery.

I think Burrows is a good comparison, but Poirier is a much better skater.

Poirier doesn't have the offensive flair that Shinkaruk has, but he is bigger, faster, feistier, and has a better shot.

ALL traits that are more NHL-applicable.

Why do people keep comparing Emile to french Canadan forwards?
Burrows, Marchand etc.

I think/hope he can be like a Grabner with more defensive play and grit.

only one fight, the rest have been minor penalties.

at VDO - 2 min for cross-checking
at ROU - 2 min for slashing, 5 min for fighting
vs RIM - 2 min for slashing, 2 min for roughing
vs SHA - 2 min for roughing
vs CHA - 2 min for interference
vs QUE - 2 min for checking to the head, 2 min for elbowing
vs VIC - 2 min for checking to the head
at BAC - 2 min for holding, 2 min for hooking

Three games with more than one minor penalty, only one game without spending some time in the penalty box. No idea if those penalties were "bad", but one thing's clear: he sure plays with an edge.

That's too much for the NHL, but he'll have time to learn to play on the edge without going over it.

might have some Steve Downie in him.

Tanguay hands, Lombardi speeds and Downie edge?
