Plus he leads all active players in Gordie Howe hat tricks, so it's still fitting to name it after him, in much the same way as Gordie Howe got the name despite supposedly only ever actually doing the deed once or twice in his career.
I believe Shanahan accomplished the feat 17 or 18 times in his career, by far the most of any player, so it should be named after him if anything.

I think Poirier has a higher ceiling, but maybe more bust potential.

Klimchuk at the time seemed like a "safer" pick, but he may only top out as a 3rd or 4th liner. At least that's the impression I got. I wish we could have seen him in camp this year.

Klimchuk is a reliable three-zone guy. Poirier's great from the red-line in.

Like most players from the Q. Hopefully he is an apt student when he goes pro.

Just out of curiosity do you think Poirer would be available at our Klimchuk pick? Only reason I would wonder is because we could have drafted Hunter with our 2nd pick. Just curious.

I believe there was a rumour that Montreal was going to take Poirier with their 1st round pick.

Sounds like he is having a great season so far. Hopefully he can keep it up.

I am excited about this pick. Any chance he could make the WJC team?

I'd say there's a pretty good chance; he's shown flashes of being a big-game player with Gatineau, his speed at that tournament would be deadly, and his size/skillset also makes him a useful PK player (Though truthfully I have no idea if that's something he does with regularity. If he wants to be a big time NHL player, he should probably start on it)

I think so. He has the size and speed to be placed anywhere in the line-up, which is definitely to his advantage.

I thought Poirier was a great three-zone guy too.

Thought the scouting reports were that he was a fiesty three zone player.

It seems like the Flames simply didn't want Hunter at all.

Rumor was the Ducks and Habs both wanted Poirier so the flames had to pounce at 22. Since they went off the tsn board they were kind of mocked for it due to the Jankowski pick but many scouts loved the flames pick.

From what I heard the flames brought in 4 kids for their mini combine
Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuck, and Petan. Petan is very small but had the flames still had their 2nd pick they likely end up with all 4 kids

I seem to recall a fabricated contraversy when the Flames didn't even bother to invite Shinkaruk to their mini-combine.

I think the biggest factor in him dropping was lack of progression in his draft year. That seems to be a red flag for teams – he dropped 12 goals and 5 points while playing 2 less games. That likely scared teams off. Contrast that with Poirier who added 17 goals and 30 points in his draft year, and showed serious progression in the 2nd half of his year. One guy a riser, the other a faller.

I remember reading about Poirier's performance vs the Mooseheads and how he at times seemed like the biggest impact player between the two teams, outshining both MacKinnon and Drouin at times. I never watched that series, so I can't comment on it.

However, while looking for what I just wrote above, I stumbled across this that I had never seen before. Looks like we have the opposite of Shremp:

Yeah I bet he wasn't even on their list of possible picks. The Flames put character and hockey smarts high on their list of what they look for in a player.

^^^

I think the opposite. I think they didn't draft him because they knew enough about him. And from what they knew, they didn't like.
