Icon37 Sens to buyout Bobby Ryan

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Expect the Ottawa Senators to place Bobby Ryan on waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

Baffling decision.

Really surprised. After the struggles he overcame last year, as well as their cap space, didn’t expect to see this at all. Maybe the Sens are planning to really weaponize their cap space

More likely, they're just cutting cap.

I mean, the Sens just don't have money. And despite Ryan putting up pretty decent underlying numbers last season, he still only put up 8 points in 24 games.

Well they're doing a heck of a job because next year they now have just $28 million committed to their roster.

This might be an indication that Ottawa is going to go big in UFA, along with trading their second round picks, for players that they want to protect from Seattle, and Ryan's NMC was getting in the way of that.

Honestly, I'm not against a two year, low money, contract for Ryan to play out as Calgary's line two RW. He looked rejuvenated last season, and having fun for the first time in a decade. Even at his worst, he is a 40-50 point winger.

Just sell the damn team already.

Melnyk is the worst thing for that team. Why would any player chose to go there or stay as soon as they become an RFA.

Yeah I really want the Flames to look at signing Bobby for cheap. I'm a huge fan and his story over the last couple years is inspiring.

He’s 33. Last year was a write off, but the year before he was 15 goals and 42 points. Would a signing of Ryan for the remaining two years he would have had somewhere in the $3M range be appealing to anyone? He wouldn’t be out that much money at the end of the day.

It was settled before the Vegas expansion draft that because of the way Ryan's NMC was written it did not force the Sens to protect him in the expansion draft.

Basically Ryan's NMC was written to only prevent assignment to the minors and not a true NMC that protects a player from the expansion draft.

He can be our "old Flame" just like Perry and Pavelski for those pesky Stars.

Unlikely Ryan would play in the top 6 here, and in the bottom 6 he would bump cheaper options like Dube or possibly even prevent young players like Gawdin or Phillips from getting a chance.

The only person he would reasonably replace in the bottom 6 is Lucic and that isn't happening.

So, no. He shouldn't sign here.

If the Sens don't have the money for Ryan I guess they should just fold because he was a big part of them reaching the cap floor this year.

I imagine his early-season production was severely impacted by the events that led him to leave the team for months.

Ottawa is moving in the right direction. Craig Anderson won't be back. Now Bobby Ryan. I think those are both smart moves. The team has a great future with some great youngsters already on the roster.

Yeah, thinking about it, while he’d be a decent deal for someone at a bargain price, he’d take a vet’s salary for a young guy’s spot, and maybe prevent a move for Hall or someone else on a higher grade.

As much as I like Ryan's story I'd rather the Flames not sign him. I'm glad he did well at the end of last season but I don't see him trending anywhere but downwards, especially if he'd only be in the Flames bottom 6..
