History shows that the very best move BT can make on the first through the last day of free agency is to turn off his phone.

Lets grow from within for a couple seasons.

I wouldn't say turn it off completely. I still think Curtis Glencross was a great free agent signing, and one of the main reasons the Flames got him was the Edmonton told him to wait we want to chase big names, and we'll come back to you later.

So if you are hunting around for that type of player that you are signing for what is a below league average salary, I think that's okay. If it's the more established veteran type, than I do agree...sit on the side lines unless it's a top end type of talent.

Nobody knew that the Neal signing would be a colossal failure, in fact-Neal was one of the big fish of that year's UFA class, and we all were super stoked to get him. It was seen as a total coup.
Likewise, we were all pretty happy to be able to grab Brouwer as well-he was just coming off a fine playoffs with St.louis, and he was also one of the top UFA's of his years class. Nobody could've seen that disaster either.
Most fans also liked Tre's aquisitions of Elliott and Smith, but those two didn't get anything done.
All in all, I think all Tre needs is better luck, but I trust him overall.

The Bruins grabbed a budget player with an extra year on his deal for a cap dump and a 1st.

Vegas acquired a defensemen with an extra year for a couple of 2nds

Tampa acquired two budget forwards with years left.

The penguins landed zucker who had multiple years left.

These deals will continue to benefit these teams going forward, and that's just a sampling from this year alone.
Really? Calgary didn't move anywhere near these kinda assets

Penguins traded their first and probably their top prospect for Zucker and lost in the play in round...awesome deal! years left!

None of these deals are very good...just because the player had a little term, if the Flames did any of these you would be ####ting your pants

You say a cap dump and a 1st like they gave up nothing...the first and 2nd round picks probably would have benefited these teams moving forward lol

David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
The Flames and D Erik Gustafsson have had recent contract talks, but unless Calgary ups the ante, the 28-year-old defenceman plans on hitting the open market next Friday.

This sounds right to me. I'm not opposed to bringing Gustafsson back, but the Flames need to hold firm on what they offer him.

Yeah, agreed, there's a walk away price and they need to hold.

Don’t know what they are offering him, but I think some players are going to be getting a big dose of reality come Ufa day. There is no chance that owners are going to be throwing out substantial money on bottom pairing d men.

And some of them might find themselves without a seat, or having to take a major discount.

Colton Soucy just got 3 years and 2.75M per.

That's my walk away price on Gus, and he'll sign for a good deal more than that. I really don't have much interest in Gustafsson.

Agreed, I think Pietrangelo, Hall and Markstrom, the guys at the top will still get their money, but the Tier 3 guys like Gustaffsson might have to settle for PTOs and minimum salary offers.

That was the impact on the salary structure the last time the CBA was settled and this Covid impact is likely to be the same.

Flames should go after the big 3, but if they don't get them, Treliving should go on vacation until a week before training camp, there should be some desperate players by then and great 1 year value deals to be signed.

I like what he adds but you can't over pay for a player like him.
Otherwise you end up with an overpaid guy that you play on the PP, shelter even strength and don't trust in high leverage situations.

Gustaffson’s scoring numbers lead to a bigger salary than the Flames’ experience with him merit, if you understand what I’m saying.

Absolutely, a lot of teams are hurting cap wise, some mid tier UFAs are not going to get what they are hoping for. Guys that wait to sign might be left with very teams that can even afford what they are asking for.

So what is the consensus of max offer Flames should give him over say three years? No doubt we all agree Gus isn’t a player you overpay. $2.5 AAV for 3 years? $3 million? More?

I’m with Comixzone that you don’t pay $3 million for a guy you need to hide on the bottom pairing but curious what others think. If it doesn’t start with a 2 I’m out unless we’re talking a one year deal.

I don't go more than $2.5 million for two years or $2 million for three years.

He's a luxury who isn't particularly good at defense. I would rather they heavily pursue an excellent second-pair guy in DeMelo.

They better get Brodie done soon so we know what we’re dealing with both cap wise and positionally. I wouldn’t mind Forbort back for the bottom pairing on a cheap short deal if we can’t land anyone else.

I can see him being worth 3 million x 3 years for some team. Not Calgary though.
