It seems like it's far more rare for defenseman to fall off a cliff in their 30s compared to forwards.

Yikes. Haven’t followed Petry much, and I think he’s a decent player. But that’s a crazy high price IMO.

A little high in $$ but the term is good, It took him 3 years to wash the stink off him but the last 3 he's been very good, he's always been in the top 3-4 in fitness for the habs so he should be ok for the next 4 years.
His game and curve reminds me of Giordano

So Edmonton actually had a Gio equivalent that they traded away. Lol, please don't ever change Edmonton.

There was a time not so long ago that the Oilers had seven Giordanos.

Petry is never going to win a Norris, so calling him a Gio equivalent is a stretch. But he is a legitimate top 4 on any team, who can play various roles defensively.
He is arguably - and I would argue this, personally - better than any of the defensemen on their roster. (debatable between him and Klefbom, but the point remains)

Taylor Hall, Jeff Petry, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Strome, Devan Dubnyk, Cam Talbot and Justin Schultz.
The Flames should look at whoever the Oilers have gotten rid of recently, or maybe ones they’re about to. Glencross worked out and IMO they won the LUcic trade. If they cut AA loose, maybe he’ll turn a corner.

Add Petry and Schultz to their D core, and suddenly they don't have the problems they currently face.
Klefbom - Petry
Nurse - Schultz
Russell - Larson
Jones - Bear
Broberg - Bouchard
And suddenly they have a legitimate NHL defense, instead of having to have everyone that they DO have playing way above where they should be

Not to worry; there is something in the water.

Is there any way Brodie signs for less then a $6 million AAV unless somehow his preference of teams limits him?

I don't think Brodie has the offense to warrant that AAV. I'd put him in the 5-5.5 range.

If Brodie is signing for less than 6m AAV I hope it is with the Flames.

Good point. Petry has double digit goals each of last 3 years and Brodie has done it once in his career.

I’m confident in saying a team of still active former Oilers would easily beat the current Oilers. You’d expect this on a scorched earth rebuild team like Ottawa, not a capped team with 2 top 5 Hart candidates.

They’d be stronger at D and in goal, and probably at wing too. Down the middle not so much, mainly because they never had many Cs to begin with and they’ve kept the 2.5 they got.

Petry wouldn't have been a free agent until next summer when, arguably, the NHL will be in a better financial situation.
Also, this argument isn't a great one even if he was available this summer since we always see "secondary" free agents do decently well when, say, a team tries to sign Pietrangelo and doesn't get him. They'd be looking for a Plan B.
