Interesting to see Derrick Pouliot waived. By many reports, he had a great game vs the Jets two days ago

I was hoping Kilmchuk would have had a better showing in Ottawa.

Possibly dumb question, but is there any chance that any of these waived players end up on opening day rosters, even without injuries ahead of them on the depth chart? In other words, is it simply strategic to waive a player now who you're still on the fence about because there is a greater chance they get claimed if it's done later (once other teams are done making all of their own decisions, or as other teams incur injuries)?

Yes, that happens often. Teams try to put players on waivers at the same time other teams are trying to get their own marginal guys through, hoping no one grabs them. Once they've cleared, they can stay in the NHL for 30 days before they'd need to clear waivers again, so it buys the teams some time.

This is what the Flames were trying to do with Byron, but that backfired when Montreal claimed him.

I think powderjunkie is asking about guys waiving early in the preseason, as these players rarely get claimed. I have heard of that used as a strategy, that is waiving someone early when they might not get noticed because these are usually weaker players.

Byron was waived at the very end of pre season, and no sense rehashing what went into that decision. But you're right, they weren't planning to actually send him down.

IIRC Vancouver one year waived Markstrom early. The thought process was that a lot of teams are still trying to see what they have in their own camp before taking a chance on someone else's cuts.

It's a calculated gamble.
