When I signed up in March this year with ATCO, it took 17 days for the online ATCO account to be setup and accessible, though electricity and gas disappeared from the Enmax account earlier than that. I didn't have to talk to a person during the process.

So it looks like Enmax’s contest is one entry per account and a daily draw until the 31st.

Not sure if it’s worth switching, have to look at last years usage really.

When I talked to them they said if you were in a contract or had the regulated rate, they wouldn't be able to cancel it on your behalf.

When I switched to ATCO yesterday it said they would start on or before the 9th. I called Direct Energy and said to cancel as of the 9th. I was on the Open Flex with DE so ATCO could have canceled on my behalf but I went ahead and did it myself anyways.

Yep I was on open plans with DE and Enmax. I cancelled both myself and ATCO starts tomorrow. I just did one year term and variable rate on both. I’ve put zero research into it so I just went with the most flexible option.

I did the same and my enmax is showing no electricity/gas on-site so everything seems to have worked out

ATCO has their next promotion out. Sign up and get a $150 Westjet gift card + "up to" $250 in anniversary credits. They are really trying hard to lure away Enmax customers.

It's okay, Enmax will soon have draw to win McDonald's coupons.

Does anyone know if Enmax is matching ATCO's current WestJet promotion? (ie. $150 gift cards = $150 account credit)

I doubt Enmax will do anything. They are like the big phone companies and don't care about existing customers.

I recently compared different months of Direct Energy vs Enmax, both gas bills are variable with 2 different $/GJ charges.

Both are SFH, similar sq/ft, similar home value. One is near Deerfoot Meadows and one is in Evergreen.

Enmax Percentage /GJ Atco Percentage / GJ
Gas Used 11.22 2.94
Admin 6.54 7.22
Transaction 11.11 *
Delivery Flex 9.04 1.241150442 2.37 1.240506329
Delivery Fix 23.04 23.87
Rate Rider 10.38 1.0808 2.72 1.0808
Municipal 7.44 0.663101604 3.69 1.255102041
Carbon Levy 11.34 0.989417989 2.97 0.98989899

These are for different months so a few notes

(1) Flex Delivery Fee (ATCO), Rate Rider, and Carbon Levy are all a /GJ cost and same between Enmax and DE

(2) You pay considerably less /GJ in municipal fee and Admin fee with Enmax.

(3) With Enmax you pay a transaction fee

(4) Fixed Delivery fee is a hair lower with Enmax than DE with more GJ used.

The difference between 2 and 3, assuming they wouldnt be higher with DE with higher GJ useage would mean that DE is less expensive than.

I guess this is why its so difficult to choose a provider because nothing is known to the consumer.

Looks like for the first time in a long time the variable rate is above the fixed rate:

https://ucahelps.alberta.ca/historic-rates.aspx

Anyone thinking of locking in at the fixed rate?

Just got an email from Enmax saying they expect electricity prices to be volatile this coming year:

Quote:
I want you to be aware that, in 2018, we’re anticipating more volatility in electricity prices than you may have experienced previously.

This may be a good time to consider your options, because your current floating index plan does not have a cap on the rate you pay for electricity. And this means you’re vulnerable to volatility.

Some ways to avoid surprises on your bill:

Choose a new EasyMax® three-year plan featuring a floating rate that follows the Regulated Rate Option rate and is capped at 6.8¢/kWh* .
Switch to a fixed-rate* that’s offered on your plan
*Delivery related charges, taxes, and a monthly Administration Fee of an average of $7.10 per site, for each electricity and natural gas, are extra.
Did anyone else get this? I checked and their 3-year floating rate plan is at 5.2¢ right now, but can go all the up to 6.8¢. Fixed rates are around 6¢ depending on the term. Checked my last bill and I'm getting charged at 3.5¢ right now. I don't really see how electricity charges could double, so I doubt I'll do anything, but just curious what others think.

I had signed up for the Energy Efficiency Alberta program a few months back. They finally came by on Monday night. Here's what they did:

Replaced 74 incandescent 60 watt bulbs with 9 watt LEDs.

Installed "smart" power bars on all my entertainment stations so that they shut off power (other than to the PVR) when they are used for 2 hours.

Changed out a shower head. I would let them replace my LED light/shower head.

Install a Nest programmable thermostat.

Checked all my appliances for energy efficiency and showed me how to get rebates on getting newer more efficient appliances.

All that for free. It will be interesting to see what that does to my Enmax bill.

Just an FYI, the shower head is crap. I’m swapping out the one in the master and the new basement shower will get the “efficient” one

I got that email too.

I wouldn't do anything so long as the residential cap is in place.

I kept my LED light/shower head in my master bathroom. The one they changed out in the kids bathroom wasn't any worse than what I had in there.

Enmax's residential electricity rate will be jumping from 5.11 cents per kilowatt-hour in March to 9.28 cents in April.

Wow... for the first time in 3.5 years my 5 year locked rate of 7.75 will finally benefit me
