I thought he only had a couple years left at that point, I remember being a little salty that he ended up playing over a decade after that and remained an impact player, as I felt that meant he had exaggerated his pain just to get out of Calgary (not saying that's the case, it's just where my spurned feelings went as a lad). He was such a warrior.
Well, first he retired after that return stint at both the request of the Flames and doctors because he was still having issues.

He sat out the entire next season, but then thought he could come back and the Flames really didn't think he was making the right call by attempting another comeback and iirc, didn't want to be responsible if he got reinjured in some way, and found a trading partner for him.

Sure the east may be less travel but that was more a convenient excuse then a legit one.considering the amount of abuse taken in games is the same.

Yeah exactly, hence why I was a little salty about that reason when he was still an impact player a decade later ha-ha. I seem to recall in his final season in 2009, some buzz going into the trade deadline that Calgary may pick him up. I think he even said afterwards it would have been a cool way to close out his career that way. But they ended up getting Jokinen and Jordan Leopold instead.

He tore some internal muscles in a game January 2004.

He didn’t come back until the Wings series where he lasted one game, then had to sit a game, then played the rest of the games. He got the hard hat that game, and the next game, gave the hard hat to black ace Turek, who hadn’t played a game that playoffs yet.
Actually, Lowry didn't play in the SCF Game 3. How do I know? I watched it last night and was annoyed with Darryl when CBC introduced the lineups. Dave Lowry was awesome and should have been in that game. The arena was so so jacked it was unreal.

But Gary Roberts was more awesome. Watching that 53 goal season unfold was just unbelievable. Before that year, you never could have convinced me Roberts was a future 50-goal guy.

I was there, too. Great player. Love this thread.

Hartford was the first game back and first goal. I knew I had seen it on the web at some point; here it is, at the 1:29 mark.
