A goalie can do only so much on their own. I think this is a function of the skill level of the defenders in front of him.

He played well for them at the start of the season. Sometime between him coming back from Stockton and rejoining Kansas City, he suffered an injury. I do not have the exact details on what it was but as of right now it appears he is trying to get back into the swing of things. It'll be a good idea to keep an eye on him for right now though.

The Mavericks lost to the Utah Grizzlies last night 5-1. They went scoreless through most of the game until the third period where C.J. Eick netted one but it stayed at that as they were not able to get any more back. Ben Halford was in net for KC and faced 26 shots. (Even with the Grizzlies goalie) Before tonight's rematch, Mason McDonald has been reactivated meaning there is definitely going to be a Flames prospect in net tonight. Mike McMurtry also played his first game with KC this year after being sent down from Stockton. The team is happy to have him back for now as he was a huge producer for the Mavs last year and was named the team's all-star representative.

Mason McDonald gets the nod tonight against the Utah Grizzlies. After two back to back losses that really didn't sit well with the team, tonight is a perfect opportunity to see this team turn around and take control of their season before it falls away from their grasp. They go into this game sitting 5th in the Mountain division and 20th in the League. They are within 1 point of the Wichita Thunder but the Utah Grizzlies sit at 3rd in the division with 52 points so they have some serious ground to make up.

Kansas City sells out tonight in honour of Military appreciation weekend and the crowd is getting a show for sure. Utah and Kansas City knocking heads, playing almost shot for shot and keeping a very quick paced first period. The Mavericks score first on the powerplay when Jared VanWormer sets up David Dziurzysnki right in the slot. A couple minutes later Utah answers back and Taylor Richart scores for Utah. Newer Mav, Loren Ulett drops the gloves after the Mavericks goal and puts up an impressive fight. Ulett is only playing in his 6th game with the Mavericks tonight. Shots end 12-8 for the Mavericks after 1 period of play.

Utah pulls ahead just 28 seconds into the period. About 2 minutes later, Mike McMurtry nets his first wearing a Mavericks jersey this year and the game is tied up once again. His line alongside Jared VanWormer and David Dziurzynski has been absolutely buzzing all night. Dziurzynski up to 2 points on the night at this point. Toward the end of the period, Rocco Carzo attempts to pass the puck that then hits a Utah player in the face, dropping him to the ice. Darian Dziurzynski plays it out and scores goal number 3 for the Mavericks. Unfortunately, the celebration is cut short as the Grizzlies quickly answer back and the period ends tied at 3. Shots sit at 22-20 for the Grizzlies after 2 periods.

Most of the first half of the period is quite uneventful but Darian Dziurzynski scores his 2nd of the game at 7:47 to put the Mavericks up 4-3 over the Grizzlies. Rocco Carzo gets his 2nd assist of the night off that goal and Darian Dziurzynski gets his 3rd point. The Mavericks hold this lead right to the bitter end and earn a split against Utah this weekend. Final score 4-3. Mason McDonald stops 24/27 shots.

Kansas City hosts the Rapid City Rush for a Tuesday night game. Mason McDonald gets the start in net. Rapid City gets on the board first and between both goalies, McDonald definitely got the brunt of the work. Not a whole lot of out of the ordinary play through the first 20 minutes. No penalties were called and after the first frame Mavericks trail 13-9 in shots.

Rapid City attacks first in the 2nd but the Mavericks attack harder. It starts with Jordan Ernst and ends with Jared VanWormer. Mavericks pepper the Rapid City goalie with shots ending the period with 31. Goals come from Ernst, Durocher and VanWormer. Willie Raskob up to 2 assists on the night and that's not all! Brett Beauvais had an amazing bar down goal and a questionable call was made. Apparently, there was Maverick interference with the goalie but looking at replays on twitter that does not seem to be the case. Either way, the Mavericks end the period ahead 3-1 in goals and ahead 31-20 in shots.

The third period showed some of Rapid City's defeat. They didn't really show much of a fight until pulling their goalie in the last 2 minutes. Mason McDonald comes up with his best saves of the game and helps his team to the 3-2 victory. 2 goals ended up being overturned in this game. Another happened in the 3rd but the net came off the posts. Thankfully for them, it does not hurt them. Shots end 36-28 for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are back in action for a weekend series against the South Carolina Stingrays. Mason McDonald stays hot and unsurprisingly starts the first night. They got Mark Cooper back today and with Mike McMurtry still down here, they have an abundance of forwards at the moment. Pretty exciting for the team thought with the potential in their scoring ability.

On the first power play of the game, the Mavericks are successful by a wrist shot from Joey Sides. Mark Cooper and Corey Durocher get assists on his goal. A good change of pace for the Mavericks whose opponents often score first on them as of lately. The first period continues on with a few penalties here and there but not a whole lot of action. The Mavericks hold their 1-0 lead to the intermission and lead 8-3 in shots.

The second period starts off with a little more rough stuff. Keeping in mind these teams have not seen each other this season. This results in some pretty tame play. There were a couple big hits off the glass but still not an overly exciting game. Later in the period, the Mavericks come up on a big rush, Rocco Carzo tries to bat a puck out of the air, Corey Durocher gets a point-blank chance then finally Nate Widman puts it home and the Mavericks extend their lead to 2. Corey Durocher picks up an assist and earns his second point of the night. The score holds to the end of the period.

The game finally shows some glimpses of the speed picking up halfway through. The Stingrays practically lull the Mavericks to sleep and both teams begin to fight. Mavericks looking to secure some insurance goals and they do! Rocco Carzo redirects a shot from Darian Dziurzynski and puts the Mavericks up 3-0. This gives Corey Durocher another assist. He earns an assist on every goal of the game so far and my vote for 1st star of the night. South Carolina calls a timeout and pulls their goalie and it takes David Dziurzynski about 30 seconds to score on the empty net. The Stingrays take two penalties in the last 2 minutes and secure their loss even further. Mason McDonald gets his 3rd win in a row and earns the 4-0 shutout win.

The Mavericks go for a rematch against the South Carolina Stingrays on home ice. Mason McDonald gets the start for the 4th game in a row. The Stingrays attack first. But the Mavericks attack back harder. Darian Dziurzynski gets a power play goal within a minute and a half of the Stingrays goal then Nate Widman rips a beautiful slapshot that makes it in off the crossbar. The Mavs hold the 2-1 lead to finish off the first period. Much more interesting first 20 minutes than last night. Shots sit at 12-10 in favour of the Mavericks after the 1st.

The second period gets its share of chances but the score stays frozen at 2-1. The Stingrays appear to be quite fatigued and not showing a whole lot of fight. This sort of happened last night too. They end up being not very disciplined, take bad penalties and don't get any quality scoring chances. The Mavericks had their share of plays that a slightly different shot placement would've easily resulted in a goal. Mike McMurtry gets a shot on the doorstep but can't elevate it over the goalie pads. Mavericks will likely go into the 3rd looking for some insurance and to really step on this team before they start to show any signs of life. Shots at the end of 2 are 23-20 for the Mavericks.

The Stingrays show signs of life in the 3rd period and score the tying goal. This goal comes from the same line that scored first. A few minutes later, the take the lead when Mason McDonald tries to make a save that deflects off the side of his pad and he accidentally directs the rebound right into the net. They try to get a quick one back by pulling Mason McDonald in the last minute and a bit but South Carolina scores an empty netter that pretty much puts this game away. 4-2 final score. Mavericks only put up 6 shots in the 3rd ending with 29 on the night to the Stingrays 33.

Tonight's game is a rescheduled game from last Tuesday against the Tulsa Oilers. They cancelled due to freezing rain and dangerous road conditions. I was unable to attend the last two games over the weekend but the Mavericks were victorious in both. On Friday against the Allen Americans, Mason McDonald shut them out by a score of 2-0. On Saturday against the Kalamazoo Wings, the Mavs worked from a 3-1 deficit to win it 4-3 in overtime. This weekend will be the first stretch of away games they have had in a long time as they will take on the Mountain Division-leading Utah Grizzlies.

Tonight Mason McDonald gets the nod for the 7th game in a row. Zach Fischer was reactivated from the IR today and recalled to Stockton as a result. Joining him in Stockton last week was also Mike McMurtry and Nick Schneider. Schneider was not getting any action down here when McDonald came back and had a hot streak of games. Mike Panowyk has also been brought back from the IR and is playing in tonight's competition. Mark Cooper is back in the AHL as San Antonio called him back.

The first 5 minutes of the game were painfully slow but the Mavericks get an early power play and shift the momentum their way for a couple minutes. They get 3 shots and held good zone pressure throughout their power play. They players start to catch up to each other and unfortunately, Tulsa is the one to attack first. They hold their 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period. Riley Sweeney appears to break away at the end of the period but is only halfway up the ice when the horn sounds and get a quality shot. Not a whole lot of other notable action.

The Mavericks get their chance in the 2nd period and tie the game up thanks to a beautiful shot by Darian Dziurzynski that hits the crossbar and lands in. A few minutes later, the Oilers go on a huge 5 on 3 penalty for 30 seconds and the Mavericks successfully kill both. Mason McDonald got peppered with shots this period and a seemingly harmless puck finds its way over the line just before the net comes off. This happened in the dying minutes of the period and the Mavericks fall behind to end this period as well. Tulsa works their way up in shots and lead the Mavericks 23-12 in that tally and 2-1 in goals.

Both teams get coincidental minors in the first 5 minutes of the 3rd period but 4 on 4 hockey makes no change to the score. These penalties end with the Mavericks getting a power play. Thankfully the guy in the box has scored twice in this game so at least he's on timeout for a bit. That penalty expires and the Mavericks make it through 2.5 periods with only 14 shots on net. Not quite the recipe for success on that one. The Mavericks call a timeout with 2:27 to go in regulation. Mason McDonald skates off before the puck drops for the faceoff and the Mavs hold pressure for the remainder of the game. Their effort falls just short and Tulsa takes this game by a score of 2-1. Shots end 32-24 for Tulsa. They will hit the road for the weekend.

Mavericks take on the Toledo Walleye for the back end of their series. Mason McDonald gets the night off and Nick Schneider will get a chance in net for the Mavericks for the first time since January 19th. He was sent to Stockton to cover Tyler Parsons (illness) but has since returned.

First period was played quite sloppy by the Mavericks but just good enough to contain Toledo to a certain extent. They get 2 power play opportunities but do not get a lot of quality zone time out of them. The Walleye get on the board first when a shot gets lost in Schneider's blocker and falls out in the net. Bad luck for the Mavericks but the 2nd period needs a little bit more drive behind it to prevent this game from quickly slipping away. Shots end 8-7 for the Mavs after 20 minutes of play.

The 2nd period was abosolutely unbelievable. 6 goals scored. 3 within 1:04 of each other then another 3 later in the period within 1:01 of each other. Mavs scored, Walleye scored, then Mavs scored again. On both occasions. Rocco Carzo and Corey Durocher put up 1 goal and Riley Sweeney nets the other 2 goals. Shots finish 21-18 for the Mavs as they go into the 3rd with a 4-3 lead.

The Mavs start off the 3rd with just over a minute to go in their power play. Toledo shuts them down and they do not get another shot in before it expires. Quite a few strings of penalties are dealt in the third including a 5 on 3 disadvantage for the Mavs. Toledo fires multiple slap shots at Schneider but none get through. Players are blocking shots and while a lot of the shots are going wide, Schneider did his job on the tough ones. Toledo uses the TV timeout to talk strategy and they pull their goalie with 1:50 to go in the period. Greg Betzold clears the puck from their zone and it finds its way to the net. This holds the Mavericks for a 5-3 victory. Shots end 30-28 for the Mavs.

A couple of quick transaction news items.

Last week, back up goalie Ben Halford was loaned to the AHL San Antonio Rampage where he joins Mavs teammate Mark Cooper who actually got his first AHL goal the other night.

It was announced today that Jared VanWormer got loaned to another AHL time. This time being the Colorado Eagles. VanWormer went to Stockton training camp this year and it's a shame he was overlooked. He really plays AHL level hockey and that is why teams keep snatching him up on loans.

The Mavericks fell to the Kalamazoo Wings at home tonight. The final score was 5-2.

Nick Schneider started and let in 3 goals in the first period and a half before the Mavs answered back with a goal of their own coming from Willie Raskob. About a minute later, Greg Betzold gets a goal of his own and the 2nd period ends with the Mavs trailing 3-2. Both Mavericks goals tonight were on the power play. Kalamazoo comes right back out in the 3rd period and scores just 58 seconds in. 5 minutes later the 5th Wings goal goes in and that holds for the remainder of the game.

It's honestly a shame to see how this game went after last nights win. I was not able to attend the game but I talked to Nick Schneider last night and he was really happy to get back in the crease and earn some confidence back Hopefully he does not hang his head too low about this one and continues to work on improving.

In the end, shots finished at 27-23 for the Mavericks. They will be back in action on Wednesday where they will host the Idaho Steelheads for the 1st of 3 games against them next week.

Kansas City acquired a defenseman from Rapid City today. He is the 2nd half of the deal they made to send Zach Fischer to Rapid City earlier this month. His name is Brayden Sherbinin. He has 40 games played on the season accumulating 7 points (1G, 6A) Interestingly enough, he actually played at University of Calgary for 2 years after coming back from playing NCAA Division 1 hockey for 3 years.

The Mavs are back in action after a 4-3 victory against the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday. They play them again tonight and tomorrow night to complete their series. Mason McDonald was in net for the last game and gets the nod tonight as well.

Idaho comes out hot and puts up 15 shots to the Mavs 9. They appear to get a goal about halfway through but it is waved off due to an Idaho penalty. Mason McDonald takes a hard hit and a Steelhead is given a charging call. He gets initial treatment from the trainer and appears okay to finish the period. He will require an extra looking at as the game goes on. That call gives the Mavericks a late power play that will carry into the 2nd period.

Mason Mcdonald stops a point-blank shot off a breakaway a few minutes into the second period but unfortunately cannot stop the rebound and the Steelheads go up 1-0. A couple of minutes later, Joey Sides takes a penalty but Jordan Klimek finds a way to tie it up with a short-handed goal. The score stays the same through the remainder of the period with Mason McDonald getting a lot of tough shots that he stops with great skill. He stops 26/27 through 2 periods. Mavs trailing behind on shots with 19 of their own.

The Steelheads get a goal just over a minute into the third period. Unfortunately, they don't stop there. About 6.5 minutes into the third the Mavs get a penalty call and Idaho scores before the whistle is blown. He comes up on the rush alone and his goal is unassisted. The Mavs get a huge 5 on 3 opportunity for almost the whole 2 minutes and do not do much of anything. 1 shot on goal is registered after the first penalty expires. Nate Widman is called for a penalty in the last 3 minutes of the game, really putting an extra damper on their chances. McDonald tries to sneak to the bench in the last 10 seconds of the penalty kill but KC turns the puck around and he skates back to make a save. Widman comes out of the box and John-Scott Dickson calls a timeout. Idaho gets an empty net goal in the last 11 seconds and really closes the door on this game. Final score ends up being 4-1. Shots end 35-30 for Idaho.

KC gets a chance to make up for last night's mistakes as they complete their series against the Idaho Steelheads. Last night their power play went 0/6 and upon talking to the head coach and captain after the game, that was the biggest frustration.

Mason McDonald gets another chance in net tonight. The Mavericks are electric to start the game and put up 7 shots before the Steelheads are able to get a single one. It pays off later in the period when Corey Durocher buries a puck the Steelheads misplayed. Assist went to Greg Betzold. The Mavs hold that and double the Steelheads in shots through the first 20 minutes 14-7.

The Mavericks kill the remainder of their penalty that overlapped into the second period. McDonald is faced with a similar play to last night where he thinks he has control of the puck, ends up giving up a rebound and a Steelhead buries it. This ties the game up at 1. The refs get a little whistle happy later into the period and a questionable call not only gets Darian Dziurzynski an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty but additional 10-minute game misconduct. He appeared to be speaking out about a cheap shot on his brother that went uncalled. The period comes to a close as the Steelheads earn some shots back. Score stays the same and the Mavs hold a slight edge in shots 22-21.

Greg Betzold sends a sigh through the rink as he takes a four-minute high sticking penalty in the 3rd period. But it does not end up being so bad. C.J. Eick makes his way out of the pressure of his zone and buries a short-handed breakaway. 2-1 Mavericks. The Steelheads pull their goalie with just over three minutes to go in regulation and then call a timeout with 2:17 to go. McDonald holds his ground and the team secures this victory. Going 2-1 in their series against Idaho this week. The play again tomorrow afternoon against the Tulsa Oilers. This week is a grind for KC.
