Default Datsyuk Almost a Flame

After reading how Holland isn’t exactly a savant at scouting and how he basically just steered the Detroit machine. I went back to verify that it was Hakan Andersson who scouted Datsyuk.

Interestingly enough in this piece, it mentioned that the Flames also has interest in him but their scout was stormed stayed & missed a chance to view Datsyuk live. Instead we drafted Dany Sabourin & a bunch of scrubs before Pavel in 1998.

Short story long... Håkan Andersson was also hired by recently deceased former Wings Assistant GM & Flames head scout... Nick Polano.. In other words... not Holland.

Flames picks in 1998

1. Rico Fata
2. Blair Betts
3. Paul Manning
4. Shaun Sutter
4. Dany Sabourin
5. Brent Gauvreau
7. Radek Duda
8. Jonas Frogen
9. Kevin Mitchell

Drafting at that time almost killed the franchise.

Do we doubt it would have been any different if the scout had seen him?

Luckily, I do not have your willpower, and I love the dancing Fata. I'll post it anytime I get a chance.

There is a 1 in 26 chance that if you order a #13 Flames jersey from a Chinese website, you'll get Brent's jersey.

There was a rumour that Savard almost traded for Datsyuk as well.

I am guessing the Wings backed away, but they were comparable players at the time. I am hoping that if this was true, it wasn't the Flames who backed off.

Man, Datsyuk a Flame? That would have been pure magic. AH WELL, some alternate universe had a good time.

Without Rico, there'd be no FATA on this forum!

Meh...I have a feeling that this organization in the 90s/2000s would have still found a way to get rid of Datsyuk for being an under-sized European and replaced him with a Stajan type.

That was a VERY remote possibility. Getzlaf + Iginla, on the other hand, was a very real and available one...yet we f..d it up by drafting Phaneuf. Yeah, yeah, I know they thought he was a better pick at the time...

A team anchored by Getzlaf+Iginla+Kipper was definitely a Cup contender.

whatif's whatif's...

Imagine if Phaneuf was offered for Thornton? So many problems would've been solved in one blow. Phaneuf was likely too unproven at the time but the rumored regehr+ for thornton move probably wins us a cup with Iginla pumping in multiple 60 goal seasons. Too bad sutter couldn't make that happen. Sturm primeau and stuart was such a joke of a return and so, so beatable. Probably one of the most lopsided trades of all time.

Shame we ended up with matt stajan and paul byron as the principle returns instead years later. Depressing really.

Hey, it’s not like during this period they bought out a Hart & Art Ross Trophy winning Hall of Famer & told him to hit the bricks whilst trading a Conn Smythe Trophy winning goalie for a second round pick...

Oh... wait...

Outside of the first round it looks relatively similar to the Edmonton Oilers drafting over the last 15 years.

Datsyuk's numbers in Russia were not even that good. Makes me think someone like Ilya Nikolaev could eventually become much more than he appears.
