Not just this, but I find it ironic that so many think we have no shot in the playoffs because of the series against the Avs last year and Barrie was one of the guys that really torched us in that series.

Can they trade Brodie for a coach?

I guess that’s the glass half empty view.
Me I see the promise and the age of players like Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington and Hanifin and think we’re in fantastic shape long term.

Aren't you guys really close to the cap too? Barrie is only 2.75 million this season while Brodie is 4.65.
That extra space on this season could let you add this trade deadline.

The Flames have about $1.2 m of cap space. That should be plenty to work with for the remaining 20 games.

Valimaki's injuries worry me, Kylington has a long way to go and Hanifin hasn't progressed in his almost two seasons here at all.

Is that enough to get an impact player though?

I am still fairly skeptical about the ceilings of Andersson, Kylington, Valimaki. Nothing against them really. It's just that since the 2008 draft (Brodie), the Flames have only drafted one 30+ point defenceman.
It's Adam Fox.
The trend will have to end soon if the Flames are going to have a good powerplay. This is why I am not as anti-Barrie as others here.

I dont think Barrie torched us? MacKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Makar and Zadorov all were miles ahead of Barrie in terms of impact on that series.

Flames need to make sure they have a pair of viable NHL top 4 defenders for next season to go with Giordano and Andersson. A Brodie for Barrie trade makes sense if they can keep him. Otherwise take the picks and go shopping at the draft.

I myself noticed Barrie quite a bit that series and thought he was really impactful for the Avs.

No... but an extra 1.9M acquired by downgrading from Brodie wouldn't be enough either.
Barrie for Brodie is a dumb idea. As part of a larger deal maybe... but 1 for 1? Hard pass.

Sure, but if Tre can't come to terms with Brodie and can extend Barrie to something reasonable with term. It's not the worst idea, maybe there is a pick coming to Calgary too? Never know. Better than losing Brodie for nothing IMO

Rather nothing. Tired of Toronto raping us.

After choking back the vomit and thinking about it, I could really see Barrie fitting in. He's good for a lot more offense than Brodie, plus he shoots right.

1.2 plus 1.9 so 3.1 million. What ever player you get counts for 25% of his cap hit for the rest of the season if I'm not mistaken.
So with 1.2 million you can acquire a player with a 4 million cap hot tops roughly.
With 3.1 you could acquire a player with 12 million cap hit for the year. Opens your options quite a bit.

I don't really get this trade unless part 2 is using the cap space savings from this trade and from the frolik trade to get a high end forward like getzlaf or Hall.

Getzlaf has been open about the fact that he is not leaving Anaheim.

If it is true that Brodie will not re-sign with the Flames - IF it is true - then I guess I would be fine with this trade as it is better than letting a valuable asset like Brodie walk for free. Would be a different story if the Flames were comfortably leading the division and looking like a contender, then it would be acceptable to lose that asset for free. I still think one-for-one is fairly lopsided in Toronto's favour, but something is better than nothing, and it isn't out of the realm of possibility that Barrie can be coached into being more solid in his own end. You can't really teach his offensive ability, but you can coach a player to be more defensively sound I think.
Barrie is going to get eaten alive on these boards with his play in the defensive zone. Maybe that's overblown, but he is definitely not as good defensively as Brodie.
