One would certainly think so. As a fan, I want him to succeed.

However, a number of posters are heavily invested in their pre-conceived Smith doctrine and outcome.

Like you, I am cheering for him to be a stalwart tonight.

Probably going to need to score 5 or 6 with the sieve back in the net.

As dino7c pointed out, he’s ranked 48 out of 50 goalies who have started 25 games or more over the past 2 seasons. That’s not “pre-conceived”, that’s cold, hard facts.

Just because you like to take a bite out of a #### sandwich and tell everyone it’s filet mignon doesn’t make you a better fan. Get off your high horse.

Likely.

Based on a quick scan of stats from games this year, it is about 44% likely that he saves 9 out of 10 shots faced and 55% likely that he wins.

What is actually likely is that some fans on this site will whine. Also likely that some will be positive, some defensive, some funny, some arrogant and some obtuse.

I myself don’t plan on looking at the GT.

Flames win 9-8.

Sooo.....your not cheering him to do well then?

Cause that is literally what he said.

You know as “a cold hard fact” that Smith will be bad tonight?

Is clairvoyance one of your many attributes or are you full of your favorite sandwich?

Although there is that element very few actually cheer for him to fail. The vast majority would like to see him "find his game" and return to being a solid goaltender.

Like you, I am cheering for him to a be stalwart but unlike you I have zero faith in his ability to do so. Saying I'd be pleasantly surprised would be an understatement, I would be downright shocked if he strung together an even passable amount of games. Sometimes it's not about preconvceived doctrines or beliefs, sometimes it's about accepting facts and accepting that at his age the game might have passed him by.

Mike Smith is a big athletic goaltender who used his athleticism to his advantage but never his size. Smith is a big guy who can make himself surprisingly small in net. Mike will be 37 in two months, that athletic ability is quickly fading, or has faded.

Smith does well against his old team.

Bennett will score 2 goals tonight, one by each side of his stache.

Spoiler!

Smith has a solid (though quiet) outing against his old team and the Flames will cruise to victory.

The GT will be insanely vitriolic, nonetheless.

Well he had a post last game so he's probably due for a crossbar.

Bennett's biggest accomplishment is that he hits "post" more often than I do.

I hope Smith finds his game as much as anyone, as i believe he (or someone else) will be needed the next 3 months....or at least starting in February.

Unfortunately between some of his recent play and the team in front of him developing some very poor work habits that looked even worse against Fla., this game has a bit of a disaster written all over it. I assume they worked on some of it yesterday in practice, but complacency has crept into the collective team and it usually takes some poor results to start reconciling that. I'm afraid that manifests tonight.

The worst way follow up with an unfunny joke is by provoking people to point out further how unfunny it was.

I've told enough unfunny jokes to know this rule by heart, Scroop.

The Coyotes have announced that they've recalled goalie Calvin Pickard -- does anyone know if Kuemper's been hurt? Are they going with an emergency backup?

My older Red Eared Slider named Onion is tired of being left out of the spotlight and wants to join in the fun. Above, are some stretching exercises he would like to to teach Smith so that he does not let in any softies.

Go FLAMES GO! FEED MY TURTLES THEIR NIGHTLY 2 POINTS!
