7.75 x 7 years and bonus structured to avoid the inevitable lock out.

I'm predicting a nice round number.

$50M over 7 ($7.14M AAV), or $60 over 8 years ($7.5M AAV).

And now he looks like an elite scorer.

No matter what it is it better be 8 years. My guess is 7.5x8 but 8x8 wouldn’t surprise me.
Keep in mind an 8x8 deal is similar to a 6x6.5 deal. Realistically though, I think Tkachuk is in line for an $8.5 AAV at an absolute minimum. It will likely start with a 9 at 8 years.

We could get him in the 7's/low 8's for 6 years, but do we really want to do that? To me Rittich is the big key. If he breaks out as a starter by the end of this season and you can sign him for a few years at 3/4mil than no question you give Tkachuk the 8 years.

If we need to spend on a starter this summer to be a contender than I think you have to look hard to bringing Tkachuk down to 6 years to make everything work.

In 2015/16, maybe. (Full disclosure - I really hope you can link back to this post this summer and say I told you so).

I'm factoring in the Treliving RFA Wizard component.

If Treliving can get it under 8 I'm happy. I think 7.5-8.5 is the sweet spot depending on term. Don't see us getting him signed in the 6's. 9 seems high. That seems more like top 10-15 player in the league. Contracts are rising but I'd be surprised if the cap hit was above 9.

I love and hate Draisaitl's contract. I love it because it sucks for Edmonton. I hate it because it may mean the Flames have to pay Tkachuk more.

Imagine if he continues at this pace and is able to take this team all the way this year... I think we will be talking about the $9-$10 million range.

Even wizard Tre will be happy to get this under $8 per for 8 years.

I think people absolutely overestimate what the contract will be. I'd pay him 8 x 8 but I think Treliving works his negotiating magic.

6.75 x 6

Keeps the Gio/Gaudreau cap alive, it's slightly more than Pastrnak signed for as cap went up (I fully expect a fairly flat cap next year as the Vegas hype has died down, they won't be pumping revenues like last year) and Pastrnak has outproduced Tkachuk. Then when Gio and Gaudreau current contract expires, Gaudreau sets new internal team cap with his new contract. Ya I'm probably being overly optimistic but whatever, we'll see.

He won't make more than 6.75.

The young core is buying into the concept that if everyone takes less the group can stay together longer and add important pieces to make them legitimate contenders.

Blowing the cap structure out of the water now doesn't quite add up.

Treliving is good at these negotiations.

If he makes 6.75 or less the "Treliving needs to start feeling the heat" thread needs to be locked until the end of time.

Well one can dream can't they.

Unfortunately there's 2 sides to a negotiation. If Tkachuk keeps this up there's no chance the number is under 7 IMO. Blowing the cap structure out of the water? We have no players making over 7 million. We can easily sign a player for over 7 million and not have it blow our cap structure out of the water. Strange comment. At some point you have to pay market price for some of your players. And the cap has gone up, contracts like Draisaitl's, Eichel's and even Tarasenko's have been signed in the past and I don't think Treliving will be able to argue that Tkachuk will be worth less than 7. Be interesting to watch Nylander's potential deal in the next 2 weeks as well. Marner could be another comparable.

Yes Treliving is good at negotiations. But Monahan and Gaudreau's contracts were signed a couple years ago, the bar they set is irrelevant now. The cost of doing business is always going up in the NHL. I think the chance Tkachuk takes less than 7 is almost zero. I'd love it, but its a fantasy IMO. At this point I'll be pretty happy if it comes in under 8.

Based on Treliving's excellence in re-signing players I honestly think we will get Tkachuk for the same percentage of the cap that Gaudreau and Gio got. With the increasing salary cap and the current trends with contracts, I don't think it is at all realistic to assume the 6.75 limit is still intact but the percentage limit might be.

Just like how Gaudreau signed for 6.75 because thats what Gio made even though Johnny was probably worth 7.5 at the time, I think Tkachuk will sign somewhere in the sevens at the same cap percentage as when Johnny and Gio signed, even though he will most likely be worth in the 8's.

I feel this would be a good way to keep ego's in check too as a way to sell it to the team that it has nothing to do with them seeing him as more important than anyone else, just simply increased cap equals higher contracts.

It’s gonna be a big one but I trust Brad will get him on a good contract. Tkachuk is worth what he’s gonna get, he’s stepped up his game again. Almost half way to his goals from last year. He’s shooting more, his release looks faster, and his playmaking is where it’s always been, elite. I think I’ve exhausted all the words I have to praise this kid, he’s a phenom.
