Starting this thread should be a banworthy offense. We are NOT the Oilers.

Never, ever, go full Oiler.

I hate it, butnits becoming pretty obvious we need an elite talent down the middle on this team.

It's pretty sad how bad that Bennett pick has set this team back.

I rather have a top 5 pick than a wc finish and the flames favourite, a first round exit.

I am about ready to start cheering for losses come end of month. Flames could realistically only have a shot at winning 2 games the rest of nov.

A high draft pick and no brainer deadline to dump contracts could be a lot better than any fathomable alternative.

How about full Pens, or Caps or Avs.

It's funny how much amonisty fans can have about fans wanting their teams to be as terrible as possible so then they can have the best chance at getting the #1 overall pick, and ideally getting the best player in the draft. The whole idea behind that philosophy is that they hope that getting that player will make their team better, and that they don't have to wish for their team to lose in the future.

The Flames swimming in the mediocre land for decades has worked really well for them hasn't it? They haven't gotten very high picks (save for one season, where of course he ends up as a bust), and in the several seasons they have made it to the playoffs, have only made it past the first round twice since '89.

Since they've won the Stanley Cup, Flames have only had THREE seasons that are worth being okay with. 04' playoff run, '15 playoffs where they beat Canucks in round one, and last season being the best in the western conference during the regular season.

That's absolutely pathetic. Maybe this team needs to finally suck out properly. Trade all their expendable assets to build for future, get a top 5 draft pick in the draft, and maybe they can start looking like an adequate franchise for the first time since the 80s.

That I don't want to watch the team stuck in the middle until I die.

You'll get your wish, but you'll be watching a basement team for a long time before they ever get a chance at being good, and maybe never.

Just look at the Sabres for example. Since 2013 they've been 8th in their division 4 of 6 seasons, with one season of 7th, and one season of 6th (last year).

They've had Jack Eichel (a franchise center and 2nd only to McDavid) since 2015, but they've had little success as a team. Funnily enough, they tanked super, super hard that year only to lose the draft lottery to Edmonton. It's never a guarantee. They got lucky that they only dropped one spot and still landed Eichel.

In their worst tanking years they had seasons of 48, 52, and 54 points, and they only broke 80 points once since 2013. Are you honestly going to stick with a team through a stretch like that? I call B.S.

The whole premise is stupid. No team should actively try to lose because the process of team building is so uncertain.

Look at the Bruins. Pastrnak was drafted 25th overall. Bergeron was drafted in the 2nd round. Marchand was drafted in the 3rd round. Rask was drafted 21st overall by Toronto. That's 4 of the best players in the game drafted after 20th.

Tanking isn't the answer. Good long-term drafting, trading, and free agent signing is the only answer. Unfortunately, that has a lot of variables involved, making it a somewhat random process as well.

Basically, there's no simple solution to team building. If there was, it would be obvious and every team would do it.

I've previously said that this wouldn't be a bad season to have a bad season.

Look at what the Avs have done - they too were up and down, but in the down they grabbed a franchise piece in Makar.
There's a lot of high end talent at the top end of this draft.
This group is showing they aren't a team that isn't going to compete for a cup. So you need to start managing to next season.
Identify the guys you think are part of that future. For me that is

Long-term: Hanifin, Andersson, Valimaki, BSD, Tkachuk, Lindholm

That's the group in my view. I wouldn't be in a rush to trade Monahan or Gio. The former because I think he's trying to evolve as a player and if he does - it's a big piece going forward. The latter for stabilization and leadership and to mentor a young D core.

So that leaves you with

Guys you move for rentals/vet help for other teams: Brodie, Hamonic, Frolik (if you can), Ryan (maybe- though I wouldn't be opposed to keeping him)

Guys you move if you can maximize their return, whether it be now or in the summer: Johnny, Sam

That's the blueprint in my view.
Johnny is your opportunity to bring in some serious quality pieces. If BT makes that deal it will define his legacy as a Gm and the future of this entire franchise. I don't think its hyperbole to call it the most important possible deal in the last 20 years for this franchise. Can't blow it.

The formula is pretty simple it's finding the ingredients that are difficult. But I'm baffled why you'd want this organization to keep doing the same things they've been doing for 30 years.

How is that any different than what we've watched for 3 decades? We either don't make the post season or crash and burn when we do. At least if we get some high picks there's a chance something will change.

My only issue with a tank is this:

Lafreniere is a LHS LW. He will be buried behind Tkachuk and Gaudreau and misdeveloped as Bennett was.

Byfield is a LHS C. He will be buried behind Monahan and Backlund as Bennett was.

I don't trust this organization to not "Nolan Patrick" a top 2 pick in this year's draft.

If the Flames get Lafreniere it'll probably be a Gaudreau-less team that gets him.

Lol, behind Backlund?? They should trade him asap not value him over young talented players. A lot of this team needs to go and imo backs is one of the first they should look at trading, especially if he still holds any value
