Default The Athletic: Absent for over a decade, the Russians are coming (again) to Calgary

https://theathletic.com/984499/2019/...in-to-calgary/

Some highlights for those without a subscription:

Craig Button thinks the Flames failed Andrei Taratukhin. Says Taratukhin came willing to play in the minors while his wife and newborn twins stayed in Russia because of Visa issues. Played all 80 games and was tied for the team lead in points and only returned to Russia after a year because he felt that the Flames would never give him an opportunity.

Treliving says that Rafikov kept saying that he wanted to stay in Russia for another year and never really seemed engaged in coming over. Says his development has stagnated.

All 3 Russians (Zav, Yel, Zag) will be at development camp in July.

Likes Yelesin's attitude - real upbeat kid.
Decent first pass. Hard defender. Rugged. Bomb of a shot. Not a puck distributor but supports the play.

Zagidulin is raw and needs physical development.
Looks like they expect him to start in the AHL with Parsons.

There was also the rumour of the 3rd Russian being signed by Calgary, Andrei Chibisov.

I don't believe he has signed anywhere yet.

Zagidulin's signing likely spells the end of Jon Gillies' tenure with the organization. I expect him to be moved in a minor league deal.

Also a good sign that drafting Russians is a thing again. There's like 5-6 in the Flames range this draft that have high upside.

Russia has never been any good at producing defenders.

We seem to get a vezina caliber goalie in every generation (Vasilevskiy, Bobrovskiy, Varlamov, Khabibulin), but we are not a goalies factory like Finland. Russia is mostly about two-way centers (Malkin, Datsyuk, Fedorov) and high-scoring wingers, who usually play on their off-side.

There used to be top quality defencemen too: Fetisov, Konstantinov, etc. And they still have a bunch of very good ones.

Which i agree should happen, but up until that last while the guy has had several seasons where he was top 10 in save % in whatever league he was in. That hip surgery set him back and he is 25. If I was an org with room for a goalie in the minors, Gillies is a free option that could turn out. Binnington is a year older. Drafting and developing goalies is a fools errand it seems.

+ Kasatonov, Zubov, etc

(but yeah, i guess the recent trend is that they're not producing high-end D)

Medvedev was better at eating pastries. Didn't he eat 6 before a World Jr game?
