There are a lot of things to not like about this deal from a taxpayer's perspective. One of the biggest issues I have is the naming rights on City owned property.
Where does this $250k a year for 10 years come from? Why not a % of any name deal? For all purposes, the Flames ownership group will be able to fund this arena based on naming rights alone from a pure dollar perspective and than some. $275 million over a 35 year deal is less than $8 million a year, I suspect the Flames can get $10-12 million in naming rights by the time this thing opens. Toronto got $40 million a year for their building and I suspect Calgary can get 25% of that or close to it.

I think the naming rights were how the City was able to get the Flames up from 33% to 50%.
I'm still firmly in the "Saddledome is good enough for me for another 10-20 years." (Mostly due to the fact I'll be priced out of my STs in the new building.) However I am OK with the details of the agreement.

There will be international competition for this one for sure. You'd need to show large, completed venues for organizations including the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB or the Olympics. I'd be weirded out if at least Populous, HOK Sport and Rossetti didn't submit.

How long does the bidding process usually take? When do you think first renderings of the designs would be released to the public? I'm dying to see what they come up with.

Was the HOK group the one that did the coilers building? If so, hope they steer clear.

My guess is that you'll see renderings as early as this fall, maybe as late as this time next year. Construction needs to start by 2021 to meet their 2024 deadline.

The currently interested vendors list has all the major locals, none of the international ones are currently listed, yet. But HOK, Populous, Rossetti, etc were at the info session on the 16th.

Nice. From the presentation slides:
Milestone Date
Select Prime Design Consultant March 2020
Select Construction Manager March 2020
Complete Concept Design June 2020
Complete Schematic Design September 2020
Complete Design Development December 2020
Construction Start August 1 2021
Substantial Completion May 2024
Info should start coming fast and furious in 2020. Man, I did not think this year would actually come to fruition.

Lifetime Suspension

I imagine there was a force majeure clause in the contract that would move everything back. That seems to be impacting all contracts right now.

30 day pause because COVID hit in between the 1st and 2nd round of interviews. CMLC says it won't affect the overall timeline.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...ium%3Dsharebar
Quote:
The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation has set down a 30-day pause in the process leading to construction of Calgary's new downtown arena.
The city-owned agency will oversee the construction of the $550-million arena in Victoria Park.
It had hoped to name the design team by the end of March. The team will include an architectural firm for the new building as well as structural, mechanical and electrical consultants.
However, the COVID-19 crisis hit as CMLC was between the first and second round of interviews with interested companies.

So I was surfing the net and came across this website called venuesnow which is a website for arena/stadium news. According to rumors, HOK-Dialog have been selected as the design team for the new arena! The article mentions the other firms who bid (populous, rosetti, etc.) but lost out. The article also mentions that they chose HOK because they won awards for Rogers Place in Edmonton and Little Ceasar's Arena in Detroit. There is a quote stating that "The Flames love Little Ceasar's Arena". Design should be unveiled around December.

Taking a while to get to 5000

It was intriguing, and I honestly thought that was the way they would go but its probably for the best to not pioneer a total arena using that new design.

Giant brick box. Of course the Flames like it. The Flames couldn't pick a good design for something if they were paid to.
