It was after Gaudreau's finger got broken. His comment was about whacking hands being part of the game and that they do it too. I don't think it was about Gaudreau so much as he was trying to say the team had to play through the adversity of him being gone, but it came across as cold to a lot of people. Which is unfortunate because Brouwer was a team guy - he would drop the mitts for teammates.
The thing about fitting in - who knows. He was trying to explain his poor play without sounding too negative on himself. I think people expect a lot of out uneducated hockey players in interviews.
