Default True Crime

Hello all,

Are there any true crime junkies out there?

Any recommendations on Crave or Netflix?

I have seen most of them but am wondering if there are any hidden gems?

Oh....and check out Crime Beat by Nancy Hixt. It is the best podcast out right now.

The Investigation on Crave. Interesting insight into criminal investigations in Denmark.

There are several excellent true-crime podcasts. Nancy Hixt is right up there but I follow a few others.

I've actually had to stop listening to Nancy Hixt's show. I found it a little depressing because the stories were so close to home. I can listen to other ones, but it was weird that that one hit me.

Some of my favourites from Netflix are:
  • Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer
  • The Devil Next Door
  • Don’t ###### With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer
  • Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez
  • Making a Murderer
  • Wild Wild Country
  • Why Did You Kill Me
  • Abducted in Plain Sight

Crave has some good ones as well:
  • The Jinx
  • I'll Be Gone in the Dark

All the Murders in the Building is a fun comedy on Disney+/Stars that has true crime podcasters as the central characters.

It'd be fun to expand to dramas that are based on true crime. Zodiac is one of my favourite movies based on real crime.

Murder in the Bayu is wonderful. It’s on Crave.

The Jodi Aris documentary on Crave is fun as well.

I imagine a psychologist would have a field day analyzing you based on your preferences.

My wife and I just watched this 4 episode miniseries.

Still just an insane and embarrassing sequence of events for the Canadian justice system.

“Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered” was also good. As well as “The Landscapers”.

“I’ll be Gone in the Dark” was okay, but it was a little too much Patton Oswalt. I don’t thimk it needed him to sell an already interesting story.

Chasing Life with Sanjay Gupta, Community Revival (I’m into local politics and community building), Crime Beat with Nancy Hixt, History Uncovered, In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt, Overheard at National Geographic, Sgtuff You Should Know (used to be my favourite but Chuck’s laugh is annoying and they get off topic so much), Stuff They Don’t Want you to Know, Stuff to Blow Your Mind, the History of WWII Podcast (I love WWII stuff but this is too detailed), the Trail Went Cold, and Trace Evidence.

I, too, love true crime, also natural history, politics, and oddities and interesting things that are little known. My biggest problem is I listen while I’m working or doing other things and miss stuff.

I listened to a podcast on those two people; they’re totally evil and it was disturbing.

I watched Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer on Netflix and enjoyed it. Worth watching the 3 episodes.

It's also "nice" that the killer was revealed at the end, rather than shrugged shoulders and "I guess we'll never know what happened" like I've had on a few of the series I've watched recently.

I almost can't watch true crime anymore that isn't done by Mike from the YouTube series That Chapter. Concise, entertaining, seemingly well researched and somehow humorous.

Here's a couple that took place in Alberta that you'd be familiar with:

And some other notable ones from Canada:
Spoiler!

Took him a bit to find his footing and niche so his videos from like 2+ years ago can be hit or miss (and often very miss as he also did conspiracy stuff) but if you like his style he has probably about 250 solid videos from some of the big cases (Arias, Dorner) to ones I never heard about before seeing his videos.

Wormius mentions the Landscapers

very different from everything else on here, but tremendous acting performances from Colman and Thewlis (and some of the supporting cast too)

I started listening to The Village podcast by Justin Ling.

I am 4 episodes in and I can't stop listening. The podcast is based on the mistreatment of LGBT people in Toronto and the mysterious deaths in the 1970s and Bruce McArthur in the 2010s.

We lived just north of The Village (Church + Wellesley) when we lived there between 2009-2012.

Thewlis is just an amazing character actor.
