Default Sidney Poitier passes away at 94

Brilliant actor and a trailblazing icon. RIP.

Quote:
Sidney Poitier, who broke through racial barriers as the first Black winner of the best actor Oscar for his role in "Lilies of the Field," and inspired a generation during the civil rights movement, has died at age 94, Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis said on Friday.

"It is with great sadness that I learned this morning of the passing of Sir Sidney Poitier," Davis said in a speech broadcast on Facebook. "But even as we mourn, we celebrate the life of a great Bahamian: a cultural icon, an actor and film director, an entrepreneur, civil and human rights activist and, latterly, a diplomat."

Poitier created a distinguished film legacy in a single year with three 1967 films at a time when segregation prevailed in much of the United States.

In the Heat of the Night, To Sir With Love & Guess Who's Coming To Dinner are some of the best films I've ever seen. How all these movies were release in the same year is beyond me.

Sidney Poitier was just simply an incredible actor.

RIP Mr. Tibbs!

"To Sir, With Love" was amazing and my favourite.

I have to admit that this news makes me very, very sad.

When my Father-in-Law was ill and living in my house we went on a 'Poitier Kick' and watched one of his films every single night for quite a while. My Father-in-Law died before we finished, so Poitier's films remind me of evenings spent with him.

Sir Sidney Poitier wasnt just a great actor, that man was a force of nature.

One of my favourite actors. Always sad, but I am choosing to watch a few of his movies over the next few days. RIP to one of the greats
