It is one first. Only two if he resigns, in which case he is not a rental. Not that he will likely resign though. He will definitely test the market, and I can't imagine Columbus is where he would choose to play.

I would not pay that for Duchene, but I would pay it for Stone.

I am glad he signed in Columbus.

The bad news is that, if Columbus now takes Panarin off the market, it just turned from a buyers market to suddenly a fair bit tighter.

People are crapping on Ottawa, but they might turn things around quickly with all these picks and prospects. They seem to draft and develop better than average.

Yes, they shouldn’t have made the Duchene deal in the first place, but this is a great return given the circumstances.

IMO this puts the cost of Stone at roughly

1st
Conditional 1st (Lottery Protected)
Spencer Foo
Philip Sveningsson / Emilio Pettersson

That's a cost I am willing to pay any day

Abramov is having a tough first season in the AHL but he's still a better prospect than Foo.

Coming into the season he was ranked comparatively to Dube and that is likely still the case even with the rough first half of the AHL season.

That puts the cost of Duchene coming to Calgary maybe, not Stone.

Stone would get more, likely an everyday roster player instead of that second prospect, because Ottawa wants more for a player that has been on the team that drafted him for 9 years, and he's their best player by far, much more consistent than Duchene was in his less than 2 years in that organization.

So he is going to play tonight for CBJ in Ottawa against Ottawa? Would be funny if they boo'd him.

I would hope that the sens staff isn't good enough to deep dive for a prospect like Pettersson. He's progressing really quickly.

NHL ready prospect like Mangiapane, and one other, with the same draft pick restrictions as what Columbus got, would be ok.

I think that we trade Czarnik back east to recoup a second round pick, as well.

I actually had the second prospect as being more valuable than Foo. Even if it's a roster player I could live with losing Jankowski.

Bad deal for both sides:

Senators get a first (likely 14-31) and two non-bluechip prospects.

Columbus gets at worst:
Nothing after July 1 without making playoffs or losing to Tampa in the first round

At best:
Duchene signed (meaning they forfeit their 1st during a year where they will have neither a goalie nor a top winger) and a third round exit.

This trade does not tip the scales for Columbus against Tampa and the best they can hope for is a mediocre season next year. Ottawa gets nothing meaningful out of this. I would rather trade a player like Duchene for one blue chip rather than a package of spare parts.

So finally got around to taking a closer look at the return for Duchene.

These are not high end prospects and these are not high end picks either.

No way could Ottawa offer this package to Colorado to get their 2019 1st rounder back.

Massive loss for the Sens IMO.

But I will say that the Sens do seem to be able to draft and develop players, so maybe in time it won't be so bad if the prospects develop and they make some good picks.

Still, doesn't look good at the moment.

So for the running Ottawa Senators tally (going back to the Duchene trade):

Kyle Turris
Mike Hoffman
Erik Karlsson
Shane Bowers
2019 First Round Pick (Top 5 pick)
2019 3rd Round Pick

for

Josh Norris
Chris Tierney
Rudolfs Balcers
Dylan Demelo
Vitaly Abramov
Johnathan Davidsson
Mikkel Boedker
2019 1st round pick
2020 1st round pick
2019 2nd round pick
2020 6th Round Pick

Conditional 2021 1st/2nd round pick (if Karlsson re-signs a 2nd, if make cup finals a 1st)
Conditional 2020 1st round pick (if Duchene re-signs in Columbus)

Let's see how they can also now turn Mark Stone in 4 pieces in their next magic trick.

Sens were never getting any more than what they got for Duchene at this trade deadline.

Columbus on the other hand sets up to lose 4 straight to TB in playoffs, and then proceed to lose three franchise roster players and thier own first round pick at the draft. Now that’s a massive fail.

They could easily avoid Tampa in the first round. Not like they are locked into the 2nd wildcard

Is this possible? Sens offer to pick-up part of Duchene's salary if he gets signed by CBJ? Then, they get an extra 1st.
