And if they can't? No conditional first but the rest is gone. I'd better be seeing a cup parade.

Maybe he's confused about why they're called the BJs.

Is that first lottery protected? Columbus is currently not in a playoff spot.

as expected the prices are high for the upper tier. 4 assets, one being conditional...
this is going to be the price for stone...
so better be ready to ante up if you want him... none of this 1st and a prospect flyers people have been suggesting

The deal wouldn’t happen if Treliving didn’t think an extension could be completed.
He has already said no 1st for a rental.

I rescind my previous statement. That's a mighty solid return for the Sens.

Abramov is nowhere close to Dubé imo.
I think the package would be more like
A better first than CGY 1st
Conditional 1st on resigning
Phillips
MEP
I don't think I'd be happy with that, even though Duchene would have been a great fit. Flames still have time to build.

I'd be pretty uncomfortable with just "I think I can do it". That puts a lot of pressure on him and Stone probably gets overpaid.

There is lottery protection in case the Blue Jackets don't make the playoffs
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The 2019 first round pick in the Duchene deal is lottery protected only if it’s a top 3 pick
Also some interesting musings. Blue Jackets have never won a playoff series and there is a decent chance that if they do manage to make the playoffs their first round opponent would be the Lightning. Takes balls to make a move for this kind of rental.

I am in the minority but I don't love the return for the Sens or the deal from the Blue Jackets end. A late first probably around the 20 mark, a mediocre prospect, a B+ prospect and a possibility of something, if I'm a sens fan would have rather seen quality over quantity. I was hoping for them they'd land Roslovic or Niku, a prospect who is closer to the NHL.
Also the BJs... wtf. Average team about to lose a bunch of their better players goes all in on a rental? I dunno why Duchene would re-sign there of all places, it's a not great team in an average city. I can't see him doing anything but testing the market now unless the Jackets go on a crazy run.

This is starting to make me think a lesser guy like Dzingel could be had for our 1st and a prospect like Ruziscka/Pospisil or Phillips.

That's a big price. 1 or 2 1sts plus two pretty good prospects. I would imagine the price would be even higher for Stone, or would it be relatively equal because Duchene is a C?
If we could get Stone for a 1st, a conditional 1st, and two prospects of the level of Abramov and Davidsson, I would consider that.
Abramov's AHL stats are not as good as Dube's or Mangiapane's.
The thing that would hurt the most is not having a 1st round pick two MORE years in a row.

I'm not surprised at the package given up, I'm surprised that it's Columbus pulling the trigger. They are not even in a playoff spot right now, and if they do get in there's a decent chance they'll have to face Tampa or Boston. There's a good chance this will backfire spectacularly.
It'd make sense for a team in a really good position to make that move, but Columbus? Wow.

CBJ obviously set on making the playoffs.
Currently, they are 1 point behind Carolina with 2 games in hand.
Puts pressure on Carolina to keep up.

Agreed, except I actually like the deal if the Sens are able to get the second first round pick. I’m surprised Nashville didn’t get it done

I have zero desire to move our 1st for anyone other than Stone or maybe Hayes

Very interesting to me the CBJ seems to have decided to be buyers instead of sellers. Them trading for Duchene and taking Panarin off the market (still could change) really changes the landscape of the market. Really only 1 premiere rental player left, instead of 3 had they decided to be sellers. Can only drive the price of Stone up.

Tampa or one of NYI or Washington, most likely not Boston. There is only a three-point separation between the #1 and #2 wildcards currently, and both of them are within reach for CBJ. While there is a good chance they draw the Lightning, there is also a good chance they play NYI, and that seems like a decent bet on a series they could win.
It's a big gamble, but for a team that has never won a playoff round I understand why they are making it. I sure hope it works out for them.

you're right, I mixed up the divisional alignments. Beating the Isles or Caps would still be a tough ask for them IMO.

Losing seems to follow Duchene around. If the Blue Jackets take on water after this trade are teams really going to roll out the red carpet for this guy on July 1st?
