World population: 8.1 billion
US population: 332 million
World civilian guns: 852 million
USA civilian guns: 397 million

USA has a four-times higher rate of mass shootings than the rest of the world.

Such a wonderful country

If you take the US out of the World numbers:

World Population - USA = 7.768 billion
World guns - USA guns = 455 million

So the US has 1.2 civilian guns per person, and the rest of the world has .06 civilian guns per person. 20 times more civilian guns in the USA than the rest of the world.

The American right trying to figure out how these things relate to gun violence in the U.S.

Is there any realistic scenario where this actually happens? I'm an optimistic person but I don't see this tide turning in our lifetimes.

Not a snowball's chance in hell.

Its a generational problem and those take generations to resolve.

Odd timing on the anniversary of Gamil Gharbi killing 14 in Montreal, and the recent Metis mass shooting in Winnipeg for the same old debunked gun arguments to be brought up again.

Yes America has lots of guns, but it has always had lots of guns. Terroristic mass shootings have only become common in the last 25 years.

It coincides with the rise of the fetishization of semi auto military inspired long rifles such as the AR15, if you go back 30 or 40 years ago the average long gun owner had a shotgun or a bolt action hunting rifle, you could use these for a killing spree, occasionally they were, but that required vastly more skill and still limited the body count due to the slower nature of the loading and aiming process

Oh good. It’s not a problem then. Thanks for clarifying that.

But the same trend is happening in Canada. 2022 alone had more spree shootings in Canada than the 90s or the 00s.

Plus there were literally millions of cheap surplus semi auto M1s in the 60s and 70s in the US, and 0 background checks or wait periods. Why weren't people using those to shoot places up?

I agree theres a problem, but we have to be honest about it, and guns appear to be simply the means, not the cause of the problem.

Haha awesome. Did you really just pull out the old, 'guns don't kill people; people kill people' thing? I'm stoked to see somebody use that sincerely. I honestly thought it was a straw man anti-gun people use to try to make gun nuts sound like idiots.

Well then prove that guns and/or lenient gun laws correlate to homicide rates.
Its an extremely complex issue, and its not as simple as "guns=bad".

What a great debate to have on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre. 26 people dead, 154 rounds fired all in under 5 minutes but it’s not the fataing guns enabling so much damage.. Brilliant.

if you google 'gun deaths v gun ownership' you'll see a nice little graph that shows clearly the more guns owned in a state the more murders per capita, Alaska has the most guns and the most murders

Woah, woah, woah!!! Now...I'm not one to defend gun nuts, but have you spent time in Alaska??

You basically need a gun because if it isnt the drunks or lunatics trying to kill you its the Bears and Wolves.

Then the Cabin Fever...then things get real grim in a hurry.
