Default External Monitor Help

Hey guys,

I grabbed an external monitor for my laptop so I can have a second screen to work on, but it only clones my laptop screen when I plug it in.

When I go into Windows 10 display settings, it shows that there's one display, and it won't detect any others.
When I go to devices and printers and into the monitor's properties to try to update drivers, the update driver button is greyed out, and only lets me look at the driver details.
The "generic PnP monitor" driver is showing as last updated 2006-06-21.

In the "generic PnP properties, if I click on "events" tab, it shows that the last event was "device not migrated"

I've also tried going into both the intel integrated graphics and the nvidia graphics menus for a fix, but to no avail.

What's really weird is that when I unplug the monitor, the windows and nvidia options to "select and rearrange displays" option completely disappears, almost like my laptop's own monitor isn't being recognized.

So I went in through my device manager and was able to update my external monitor drivers using the cd that came with it, so now it's recognized as the monitor model instead of "generic pnp display", but I still can't seem to get a second monitor to show in windows "select and rearrange" display settings

I was going to say it almost sounds like you don't have the right drivers for your video card installed but you say you go into nvidia options... so it sounds like you have the right drivers.

What model of laptop? What port are you plugging the monitor into? It isn't one of those USB monitor adapters is it?

I'm going to try to update my nvidia driver, as my current one is dated 2017-05-01, and the driver on msi's website is 2017-06-19.
Not really confident that's going to change anything though.

Wow, so this was a super easy fix...
Finally found a suggestion online to just hit windows key + p, and it gave me the option to select extend to second monitor.
Not sure why that option wasn't in the display settings, but it's officially solved.

Thanks for the reply though Photon!

Yeah unlikely it would.

You've tried the Fn-F2 key combination when the monitor is plugged in? That's supposed to switch the display output mode between LCD, external, and both. Maybe on LCD it mirrors?

My dual monitor shows up in the control panel, so yeah sounds weird, but glad it works!

Windows P is for Projector, a vestige of the days when the primary use of the laptop's video out was to output to a projector for presentations. Super handy at home when I want to plug my laptop into the TV to watch movies.
