Default General 2024 Paris Olympic Games Thread

Opening ceremonies set for this Friday, July 26 in the morning/afternoon in Canada with prime time replay in the evening.

I love the Olympics, and prefer the summer games over winter. Looking forward to great competitions!

Some recent news...

Japan's star gymnast and I believe team captain has been kicked off her team and sent back to Japan for smoking and drinking alcohol. Seems excessive...

France also decided to ban female athletes from wearing hijabs while competing in the games. Not sure what the hell they're thinking with that rule.

Quote:
At the 2024 Olympic Games, the host country France has banned Muslim women from wearing a sports hijab or any other form of religious headgear when they compete for France. Such a ban is imposed in several sports in France, including football, basketball and volleyball, in competitions at all levels, including youth and amateur ones.

The bans undermine efforts to make sports more inclusive and mean that Muslim players and athletes who wear a hijab in France will continue to be discriminated against.

It's France, they don't discriminate based on your skin color, they discriminate based how 'french' you become.

Waiting to hear who Canada's flag bearers will be.

Also, Canada begins defense of their women's soccer gold against New Zealand a day early! Thursday at 8:30am MT!

Based on the times in this year's Tour there is something out there that is untestable but is way way beyond EPO so expect records to be shattered in speed and endurance events

They should be booted from the Olympics if that is true.

Man, this is not cool for Canada. 2 assistant coaches have been sent home and the coach will not be there for their debut.

Concerns of low interest in and attendance of the Olympics are starting to creep up.

France is vehemently secular. If we're going to be culturally relativistic, well, that's their culture.

I half heard on the news that they have millions fewer tourists than they were expecting. Like geez who didn’t see this coming? Already a heavily populated and expensive city, cost of living and travel are insanely expensive and everyone is struggling, war in Ukraine, unrest in the Middle East, threat of terrorism.

My question would be, who would be crazy enough to want to go?

Trying to watch some Olympics coverage on CBC Gem. As with past games they've got a pretty good interface where you can get a replay of every single event. But this year I cannot navigate within that video...no fast forward or rewind...just pause. Ridiculous.

It's via my Google TV. It's definitely worked in the past. Maybe I'll have to chromecast it or something but this is stupid and annoying

Peacock (NBC USA) has great coverage, again. It's a paid service but is included from my wireless carrier. Did also download the Gem app and use with VPN.
Got a sim for 5g tablet just for the occasion, as I will be on the road a lot the next couple weeks.

I mean, who doesn't want to pay hundreds of dollars to watch break dancing? And in four years you get to watch flag football.

I had the same problem with CBC Gem on a Nvidia Shield (basically Google TV). Pretty much useless. I ended up hooking up a computer to the TV and went through a web browser instead.
