They played well enough to win tonight. 3 plays cost them. 2 missed FGs and the Stevens fumble.
The defense was much better tonight, but the offense continues to be frustrating, although Mills ran really well. The offense started well but goes through long stretches of just garbage. Lots of boos when Jake threw the 2nd down pass away I the 2nd overtime mini game.

I noticed that at the time but it was the right play without question...there was no one open and if he gets sacked the FG is much harder or throws a pick...its game over.

They’re 4-9.
Either put it in the end zone or GTFO the field.

There was no one in the end zone to throw it too.
The right play is the right play...not sure why their record matters.

Its basically do or die...they need wins not ties. Need to be a more aggressive. You may be right about nobody being there but the question is why isn't anybody there.

In most cases yes they need wins not ties.
But in this case a tie is as good as a win.
The season series loss to the Elks is no longer relevant as a tiebreaker (provided the Elks don't get a tie).
The season series vs Sask is suddenly relevant due to them having a tie. The Stamps can grab it by winning both games vs Sask.
So as long as Elks & Sask don't get any more ties, the Stamps aren't hurt by today's result. If the Oct 5 game ends in a tie, we all have reason to reach for our tinfoil hats. Then again, they're competing against each other for the playoff spot too, so they both have incentive to win.

You can blame coaching all you want, but no one was told to grab a face mask or hit someone late...in fact i guarantee they are coached not to commit such dumb fouls.
Just a dumb football team at times and it has cost them dearly all year.
|
Lack of discipline is a coaching issue. This team has shot themselves in the foot with bad penalties all season and the talent level is not good enough to overcome self inflicted wounds. This is either a really dumb football team or there's too many selfish play.
Sure looked to me like Jake was scared to throw the ball more than 10 yards down the field at the end of the game and OT. He threw almost everything underneath as if he was scared he would get picked if he threw the ball downfield. You can't win playing that way and they in fact did not win this game.

A tie is a positive step forward. They were that close to losing too - 1 point is better than 0. Get 2 points next week - it is a positive step forward and with a super fragile team, it’s a positive.
Jake is frustrating, as he won’t go down field as he’s very tentative. What I’ve noticed is when he goes to throw on the run, he fades his body away on his back foot and then throws. So instead of stepping into his throw, he always (Always!) fades off his back foot which causes floaters. It’s most likely part of leaning away from a big hit when he’s throwing the ball as many QB’s get pasted as soon as they release the ball - to which his body fades to ‘take’ the hit without getting crunched… even when he’s not going to get crunched. It’s an element of protecting your body which is very wise, yet the way he does it makes him very ineffective.
So you get a tie, instead of a win. Because his psyche is shattered and it shows in his throwing motion. Throwing off his back foot fading away. He’s not the QB of the future - so in some ways you want games to continually show he is the not the guy (so that Dave doesn’t keep his car hitched to his wagon) yet you want the team to win. He does give them the better chance to win, but in the end he got us a tie… not much better than our rookie Bonner but a point is a point. Bonner does need more time maturing - next year will be his year to take a serious step forward. Will we ever see Schiltz though? He could be the guy moving forward / if somehow the team clicks with him… looks like we will never get a chance the to see what we may have.

I agree with you on this, it was definately the right thing to do, the coverage downfield was good, and Jake had rolled away from the pressure cutting off half the field.
One thing that's clearly noticable, the Stamp's O-line is not good at dealing with pressure, the blocking scheme is unrecognizable, half the time it looks like a straight up zone block, then its BOB, there's no line identity, and they're equally bad at both.

He didnt make that toss in order to give the team a chance to win...thats the point.
If the throw is picked off, then its almost assured they lose.
Doing what he did gave the defense a small chance to win the game, even though it didnt happen.
This club isn't great, that much is obvious. The fumble at the 2, the penalties on the last drive, the dropped pass by Logan late, the missed FG's....all things that contributed to the result.
That being said, the Stamps played really well on both sides of the ball for most of the game ....even Maier. The result just didnt match the efforts, which is something that happens in all sports with fragile teams, of which Calgary certainly is.

It turned into a FG battle in OT, maybe after the two OT games, if still tied, start kicking FG's starting at the 45 yard line and go back 5 yards until somebody makes and somebody misses

That reminds me of the hockey shoot out. I’d prefer they keep playing with regular OT rules.

Just play out the season. A coaching change won’t fix much. We need a new scheme and more talent.
Firing Monson should be #1 on the to do list.

Fixing both the o-line and d-line and trading for Vernon Adams should be 1, 2 and 3 on the priority list.

Missed out on Dru Brown this past off-season although I don't think Winnipeg wanted to trade him to a fellow West division team. The same might apply to BC and Vernon Adams. However, what about Cameron Dukes of the Argos, I think he wants a chance to be a starter and that's likely not going to happen as long as Chad Kelly is in Toronto.

I would take a flyer on Dukes. He's got much more athletic ability and possibly a higher ceiling than Maier.

Another guy I'm curious about, without knowing too much about him, is Kurtis Rourke.

If the Stamps are in a position to draft Kurtis Rourke, they should run up to the podium without hesitation lol
