Yeah, Troi got a bum rap because the Enterprise was going down either way, and she did a pretty damn good job of it.

Generations receives its fair share of criticism, but it deserves credit for giving us Soran, portrayed by Malcolm McDowell. He was a haunting and chilling villain with understandable motivations and loads of charisma, and delivered a number of golden chestnuts such as, "time is the fire in which we burn" and "time is a predator," that offer profound philosophical insight.

While the movie may have its flaws, Dr. Soran's character shines as one of the greatest Star Trek villains, trapped in a film that falls short.

The best part is the fact that Malcolm McDowell did that one for a paycheque. He did not want to be there.

Now that is a Professional!

Kind of like when Michael Caine talks about whatever crappy Jaws sequel he was in. "I don't remember the film, but I remember the house it bought."

Considering Braga and Moore were basically writing them at the same time, I've always wondered what Generations and All Good Things... would have liked if they swaped them as the finale and first movie.

The movie had way more studio notes though, that's why we have the Duras sisters in there. They were told it needed Klingons

Pretty much. And I dont have a problem with that, they were honest about their intentions, and its not as though either Caine or McDowell were anywhere near the 'weakest links' in either film.

Generations is probably the second best TNG movie. Ugg.

Huh...well ####.

Insurrection was okay! It was like...a long episode with a budget...in season 3?

First Contact would have been great without the Borg costume redesign. They kind of went from pale Pinhead to pale zombies.

I just can't wrap my head around watching the movies without watching the show and then complaining that the characters are hard to get a feel for.

And completely ruining their entire ethos by having a 'Queen' who is in love with Data.

Its like a Star Trek mandate, they can have so many good things and great ideas but its like its mandatory that they shoot themselves in the foot at some point.

Take Insurrection. All in all, that might have been a pretty good mid-series two-part episode. Its not a great movie though.

The Admiral is evil? No way! No Starfleet Admiral would stoop to nefarious misdeeds!

Its like the Admiralty of Starfleet go to work in this horrible office building, they all sit in their cubicles eating bologna sandwiches and they just get so bored they just cant help themselves get up to no good.

Me neither. Thats insane.

That would be like having never seen anything Star Wars and walking into Rise of Skywalker. You wouldnt have a goddamned clue as to whats going on.

"Are we riding horses in Space now? Okay..."

But Star Trek is such a cultural phenomenon I imagine you'd have to know something about it and its characters, even if by accident or just social osmosis.

TBF the first 20 minutes of TROS I felt like I had no clue what was going on.

Insurrection was so terrible, but we held out the hope, Star Trek had never had 2 bad movies in a row right? Right?

Another one of those "how is this possible" type statements. TNG was huge.

Watched First Contact (after watching the two part episode thanks for recommending it to me, helped a lot!) and I loved it. I thought it was a return to form, and I got to know the crew a little bit more and really liked them, especially Picard he was fantastic in this. The story was good, really like the Borg as villains, and seeing vulcans at the end was cool.

Honestly, prior to watching the movies I've only had a vague knowledge of Star Trek. I could name some of the characters but I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about them. The first Trek movie I watched wasn't until the 2009 reboot. I also remember volunteering at the Calgary comic expo the year the cast of TNG came and it being super busy and people were telling stories how awesome Patrick Stewart is in real life.

This maybe a hot take but I actually liked Insurrection. Wasnt the greatest movie ever but it wasn't terrible. I enjoyed the humor and liked the plot, I think it's underrated.

I think it's the 2nd best TNG movie, but it would've worked much better as an episode of the TV series.
