There definitely some advantage. As Double K stated, the problem is that if you don't give the higher ranked players an advantage they'll skip regular PGA tournaments once they establish a big enough lead. DJ wouldn't care if he were the #1 player or the #20 player, he would definitely skip the BMW if already qualified.
There are three options for you match play enthusiasts.
1. Have match play but higher ranked player starts 1 UP, or they start even but if all square after 18, the higher ranked player wins.
2. Do 24 player double elimination with the bottom 16 players already on the losers' side. So they have to run the table to win, where as the top 8 can lose once. (this might take too long)
But in the above two scenarios, I don't think players want to show up and risk playing one round and getting eliminated. Would suck for tv too.
3. Have the same format as now (with the handicaps) and have stroke play the first 2 days. Then the top 8/12/16 move on to match play. At least everyone gets two rounds.

If there was a format where DJ wasn't the champion the way he played, I'd say that was a bad format.

I found out later that Xander gets the OWGR points for winning the tournament.

You can't say this with any sort of certainty. You don't know how DJ (or anyone else for that matter) would play if everyone started at even.

At some point in my life it would be amazing to get a chance to play some of these incredible courses on tour but obviously that likely won't happen. For Winged Foot, I would love to play some chip and putt with those contoured greens and false fronts. Basically play each hole from about 90 yards out and see what I could do on those greens.

I predict lots of tears, it doesn't look anything less than brutal to play.

I've played a couple courses around Calgary that I thought had some pretty crazy greens but in comparison to what I see at Winged Foot they would probably be flat.

I played the Hawk at Priddis once and it was comical how sloped and contoured the greens were, and they were playing like 12 on the stint. So I can only imagine what something like Winged Foot or Oakmont is like.

Not bad for the Canadian group. Connors +1, Hughes and Hadwin +2

We all know what that means for tomorrow: Dry everything out and put the pins the bare minimum on the green or in places you cannot get close to.

To be fair right now there is no wind. Winged Foot is brutal because it's close to the coast and the wind is usually up. If the wind picks up for the rest of the tournament it might still be an over par winner.

no wind, playing soft (relatively), and friendly pins...
likely won't have any of those three things for the final 3 days

Course looks much tougher today. Pendrith was doing well, +1 after 27 holes but 4 bogeys to start the back 9 has him probably around the cut line.
I'm predicting the cut to be +5

Probably not till saturday. Too many players to get through today to make it truly difficult.

Brutal out there. Thomas Pieters had the lead at the turn -6. Then he shot 41 on the back.
