The fact that Nesterov shoots left and plays the right side (thanks dammage79, also, source: https://www.rawcharge.com/2020/10/17...ornton-toronto) makes it look like Nesterov is direct competition for Kylington. This is really good because if Kylington wants a position on this team, he needs to earn it. I personally believe in Kylington and his upside, but I think he needs to fight hard to earn a position because that will be best for his development.

Also, I just had this strategic thought. If Nesterov signs for $700K and is in competition with Kylington, it definitely encourages Kylington to sign for league minimum or close to it as well.

What's with the delay in singing Kylington?

@RyanNPike

Notable: like TJ Brodie, Nesterov is a left shot D who can play either side. During his time with Tampa he regularly played his off-side (the right). #Flames

Because he isn't a priority. He isn't going anywhere. This is what Treliving typically does with these type of RFAs. Make an offer then wait. Mangiapane didn't sign until just before training camp last season and was pretty much in the same negotiation position.

The only leverage Kylington has is to sign in Europe and most of those teams are overloaded with NHL prospects right now or sign an offer sheet (which isn't very likely)

More I think about it, the more I think this is a super power move by the Flames. This guy is Brodie but in NHL20 speak just take away 5 point from def. Awareness and slap it into off. Awareness.

It’s likely he’s going to be a player who accepts his qualifying offer ($787,500 according to CapFriendly).

The only way it’s not his two-way qualifying offer is if they negotiate a strictly one-way deal for slightly less money.

I love the fact that he hits. And hard.

Valimaki - Nesterov would be a fantastic 3rd pair.

I know Valimaki is looking good in Europe, but he still needs to learn how to be a good NHL defenseman, and shouldn't be rushed. Playing with an experienced, mature partner who can cover up the occasional mistake, and also isn't an off-the-glass possession black hole (like Hamonic) would be perfect, IMO.

I think people are getting carried away here. If you think this guy can replace a TJ Brodie or Noah Hanifin or has the offensive ability of a Gusty I think you might be expecting too much.

At least this means Petrovic won’t be our 7th D.
Assuming they both sign, having two defencemen like Nesterov and Kylington who can play both sides as your #6/7 adds some flexibility.

Whoa that would be a deal that I didn't even know I wanted but sounds so juicy now that you've said it... but apparently Forsberg is a right-shooting LW, so not sure how well he would convert back to the right side.

Feels like there's going to be alot of these $700k signings coming up around the league.

Quite like this one, low risk, high reward, only snag seems to be is if he's awesome we're in a bidding war to keep him, but that's just same point we are now so who cares.

Tkachuk goes to right wing I think. He has had success there before

Done deal per PuckPedia

PuckPedia @PuckPedia
The #Flames have signed Nikita Nesterov for 1 year $700K (1-way).

Wow. Actually super impressed by how the management is filling out the bottom end of the roster with some good value signings

My guess is the Flames want him to take a 1 year $700k contract like Gawdin and the Veteran UFAs had to improve the cap situation.

I'm guessing he doesn't want that.

He probably should just take his QO.

Guess what jersey number Nikita Nesterov has worn for his whole career?

89.

I sure think our bottom pairing and depth are getting shored up nicely.

Now its either stay the course and hope for the young guys to improve (Dube,Mangi,Anderson,Hanifin,Valimaki,Gawdin,Killi ngton,Mackey,Phillips,Ruzika)

Or out of left field trade to blow us all away (for good or bad)
