They need to fill out the roster and don't have a lot of extra cap space to do it.

Well............. better hope he's a frickin genius.

Not sure I understand. You had Jankowski and Rieder leave, and brought in Nordstrom and Simon. Is this not routine activity of 4th line replacements?

Adding legitimate NHLers for league minimum is a homerun. Especially one that was put with Crosby and Guentzel to do a lot of the hard work for that line.

Jankowski and Rieder out
Simon and Nordstrom in

Without knowing anything about the player, I just assumed a 12th-14th forward type. But reading the comments from Pen fans, he sounds like he might be a 3rd line guy. That would be an interesting boost to the bottom 6 if true:

Simon - Bennett - Dube
Lucic - Ryan - Nordstrom

I don't think that's the case at all.

You lost Hathaway last offseason, and you lost Jankowski and Reider this offseason.

You need guys to play on the bottom line, and be able to spend time in the press box without worrying about their developement.

All Treliving is doing here is bringing in some veteran NHLers at league min salaries to play on the bottom lines. Hopefully they have some grit and character to boot, and that's all you can ask for.

This is a key component of his job description. I don't get the disparagement.

What are you talking about?

The only players this team can afford at this stage are minimum players.

Still have 3-4 spots to fill with 2.59M left. They can’t even afford 4 more minimum contracts.

Please explain how signing depth players is a bad thing, or constitutes 'smarter than everyone else' comments?

Why do people view Treliving doing his job as a negative thing?

Have to laugh at Steinberg here who kept referencing the lost depth up front in Jankowski and Rieder and suggesting that we trade Monahan for lesser pieces to fill out the lineup.

Simon and Nordstrom >> Jankowski and Rieder.

These are guys that play the game hard, fast, and with a purpose each shift. Things that Jankowski specifically lacked, and Rieder rarely brought during the regular season.

I'm not sure what you were expecting. This is a bottom line player, getting paid bottom line money.

If Calgary and Pittsburgh has traded Simon and Jankowski three weeks ago and each team immediately signed the players for league-minimum, I doubt very many people would have complained about it from Calgary's perspective.

That's basically what happened. Pittsburgh replaced Simon with Jankowski and Calgary replaced Jankowski with Simon.

Yeah, and let’s not forget that Janko cost 1.675 last year.

Depth. Nothing to really see here. Still waiting for the post arbitration trades to go down league wide. I think we will see something big on the Flames front.

Can't say I know anything about this player, but I do get a kick out of it when players are good enough to be depth players on teams like Boston and Pittsburgh, but for some reason a few people think they aren't good enough to be depth players on the Flames.

Enough of all these minor moves up front already. Significant changes are gonna be needed up front if this team is to go anywhere in the playoffs. How can everyone understand this except for Brad Treliving?

Simon underwent shoulder surgery in May. At the time the recovery time was expected to be 6-7 months. So he should be close to ready now.
