Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2020 - Round 7
It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.
First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results
Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.
I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.
We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.
2020 Results
1. Valimaki - 85%
2. Zary - 62%
3. Pelletier - 74%
4. Wolf (Run Off)
5. Mackey (Run Off)
6. Pettersen 42%

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Poirier for me. Love the high end upside.

Converted to the Zavagorodny camp...can’t go wrong with Phillips (Philips?) or Poirier though at this spot, these are most likely the next 3.

I have Poirier then Phillips, but I think either one would be a good choice.

It was in a toss up between Zavagorodny and Poirier but it is those 2 before Phillips for me. (I had both before Mackey as well)

Little Z. Then after little Z I'm pumping my vote for Nikolaev.

I expect Phillips to be pushing hard for a spot in the preseason.

Kuznetsov getting slept on imo. He is going to be a big riser on this list in the next couple of years.

Voted Kuznetsov too - seems like a good puck mover who already has a very high defensive acumen and plays the body - some offensive upside as well. Good skater, great gap control apparently - sounds like a top 4 defencemen that can be counted on to chew up a lot of minutes.
Parsons is next for me - I have him ranked higher than Wolf on my list by a slim margin. He shows up for big games and excels. I think he is a goalie that teams win because of, not in spite of. If he didn't have his issues since turning pro, he might have been in the top 2 or 3 for me. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year and put the past behind him. I think he is a rock star in net. If he continues to struggle this year health-wise, then he will start falling down my list more heavily.

I sure hope so. The Flames used a 2nd round pick on him. Itd be a shame if he went the way of Hunter Smith or Mason McDonald.
Of course, being a college guy there is also always the chance he goes the way of Adam Fox too.

Just curious why you would make those comparisons.
I mean yeah, they were 2nd round picks (Smith and McDonald), but the last 4 2nd round picks have been Andersson, Kylington, Parsons, and Dube. Why ignore them to compare his to Smith?

I think about a third of second rounders become nhl players so that’s your simplistic view of probability

I'm not ignoring anything. The poster figures Kuznetsov is going to sky rocket up the rankings, which means he already compared him to prospects like Dube and Andersson.
I hope he's right and that Kuznetzov doesn't go the other way, and listed examples of prospects who did that.
As a 2nd round pick, he SHOULD be a riser, otherwise it'll be a blown pick. Any prospect the scouting staff deemed good enough to take in the 2nd round should have some expectatuon and at least be good enough to make some noise in a fan ranking.

I believe this is likely true. I have passed him over thus far because he is still so young and so raw. I expect he will prove a lot mire this upcoming season.

We might end up having a run of 5 players in a row who were drafted in the 6th round or later (or just signed).
