Default 2018/19 Salary cap is $79.5 million. Floor is $58.8 million.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1009522326214504448

Which means the Flames have roughly $17 million + in cap space with Jankowski, Kulak, Hathaway,Shore, Rittich, Gillies as key RFAs to potentially re-sign

Hopefully Brad doesn't decide to fill that space just because it is there. His UFA signings have not been the best.

I have to admit a 4.5M bump will give a couple of division rivals some breathing room, especially the Kings.

The bottom line is that this benefits the UFA and RFA class the most.

All this available cap space across the league and a very mediocre UFA group.

And yet we will see that cap space used anyway. Neal, Stastny, jvr et al must be salivating.

I can't see it unless they land Tavares.

Otherwise it's going to be hard to spend as much cap as they will have available to them without doing what Treliving said they don't want to do, and that's over pay 30 year old UFA wingers.

I would have to imagine that we are now entering the phase of internal team caps for a lot of teams. $80 million is a lot for some of these small markets to spend on salary, even with revenue sharing. I know that the Coyotes are now perennially a cap floor team, and I don't know if that's going to change any time soon. The Hurricanes are not likely to spend a lot more than the cap minimum due to financial restrictions, and now Ottawa is probably going to be moving in the same direction. How many other teams are likely to spend less than $70 million moving forward?

The Winnipeg Jets have never spent to the cap, and have never spent as much as $70.0 m.

Man the cap is pretty far ahead of where I saw it going a couple of years ago - even several million per team beyond my highest, most generous estimate. We could see a $100M cap by the time the Rogers contract runs out in 25-26 at the rate revenues are growing.

I am one of those fans who likes the idea of salary cap as it makes building more interesting and challenging for GMs. But at the same time it seems almost impossible to build a dynasty able to contend for say a decade. Success makes it harder to keep your group together. Increasing the cap will give some room for GMs and fans wont be loosing their favorite players only because their agents demand more cash.

I'm surprised the cap continues to shoot up considering the fall of the Canadian dollar. 80 million converted in our dollars is quite a few Skittles. I hope it doesn't impact the Flames or smaller markets like it did back in the 90s. A possible North American recession / trade war combined with a high USD doesn't bode well for Canadian markets.
