As soon as he hit free agency it was clear he was gone. The Flames offer was probably better. But like I said it sounds like he got bad advice, the Flames moved on.
This is what was left for him.
I really don’t think he went into this thing thinking he was going to screw over the Flames. GMs do dumb things on July 1st and when you hear you will get 4 years yeah I’d do the same thing.

Yes, OK is a cheap gamble with possible high return, but it looks to me like it screws up a lot of things.
Why make things difficult?Did they think DAL or NSH were going to swoop in?
It makes no sense for a guy who was on the path to a PTO.

Can we "help" them (at a big cost) with our free cap space?

Bad advise or not, flames did the right thing all the way.
1. Took care of their player in need
2. Let him go if we was not willing to sign for their terms
At this point we don't know what Oliver will be - or if he will face any future issues from his personal past.....
Flames did all right....I know you can't judge someone by their IG account but it looks like he's really interested in stuff outside hockey - like taking on a modelling career or launching products. Good for him i guess, time will tell if he will pan out to be anything or his hockey career will just fade away into the sunset. Maybe he's doing the flames a favor here
Best of luck to him..hope he finds the path to treating others who care for him with more respect though.

I still think there is a chance he simply had to move on to help with the issues he was over coming. A literal change of scenery. Wouldn’t be uncommon.

I doubt it.
Looking at their roster the quickest move to solve their problem is to trade Girard & a roster forward for nothing (5-7th rd) in return.

I sure hope JP Barry gives Kylington a big discount on his agent fees. They really misread the market and bungled this whole thing.
I’m sure Barry will argue that Kylington will have a good chance to make up the difference next year but he’s going to be completely buried in Colorado and will have to learn a new system with new defensive partners.
There’s a chance that this is Kylington’s last NHL contract in the NHL.

An American market getting a break that a Canadian market didn't. The beat goes on...

Really doesn’t seem like an American team getting a break. It’s a player who had limited options and this is what you get.

They will acquire a couple D at the deadline and he will be 8-9, if he doesn't play himself into that spot already.

Except sometimes money isn't the most important thing.
Maybe he got bad advice or maybe he thought moving on from a situation was his priority. (Not even the Flames per se but just going to a new environment.)
Signed,

Lots of interesting takes in here. Everyone has different motivators, and money isn’t always the top of the list. I know lots of people who have taken less money to change the situation they are in. Canada can be the best place and the worst place to play hockey. Add to that the fact the flames are going to rebuild and that can be tough and it’s more than likely he was going to move on and would take less to do so. It’s not a negative ion Calgary, it’s not a negative on him, it’s just him choosing an altered path.

Happy for the person, I know some feel stiffed or are upset that it feels like he screwed us, but that’s simply not the case.
Unfortunately he tried to get a bit too much and called Craig’s bluff, but Craig wouldn’t come crawling back and pivoted to move on.
Hope he continues to recover and that Colorado can support him as much as the flames did. The Flames have continued to assure Oliver that they’ve got his back when it comes to the mental health even with him moving on.

People can feel what they want. He tried to get more money, gambled and lost. If I were Conroy I’d have dropped my initial offer if he came back after overplaying his hand. So I’m glad they stuck to their guns. His upside was nice but after a bit of stagnant development his chances of reaching it are pretty low, so the price is right. Hope he finds his way in life. I don’t blame him for doing what’s best for himself - we all need to do more of that at times. No big loss though.

Steinberg had reported there were hurt feelings on both sides and this seems to validate that. Even post July 1, both parties could have made a deal better than this.
