He is a possession sinkhole who scores empty-calorie points. Phil Kessel was also amazing once upon a time. Not anymore. That's Kane in a nutshell. He was subtraction by addition for NYR last year and will probably be even worse in Detroit this year.
8 years ago he was the mvp and led the league in scoring.

But you said he’s been declining offensively for years?

Hawks closed that door.

Even eight years ago, in that Hart season, the Blackhawks were down 238-190 in high-danger chances with Kane on the ice at 5v5. And then they were quickly exposed in the defensive zone in that year's playoffs and never won a round with him again. It should've been Crosby or Thornton that year.

In eight of the last eight years, the Hawks/Rangers have given up more than they've generated with Kane on the ice, and it's only gotten worse over time. Last year, he was borderline unplayable at 5v5 and made the Rangers demonstrably worse after they acquired him. The high-danger chances with him on the ice in the playoffs were 33-15 NJ. But he is undeniably very good at getting secondary assists on the power play.

Now, he's coming off a surgery that literally no one has ever been able to successfully return from, and he's going to break up a Red Wings top line that has been clicking at a solid rate so they can try to reunite a DeBrincat/Kane combo that never once had any meaningful success in Chicago beyond empty-calorie points. It's a pretty bad bet for a Detroit team that has made a lot of them since Yzerman took over.

You said he was declining offensively every year, when up until the time he got injured, he was scoring at a 90+ point pace.

You changed the goalposts when you actually checked his numbers and saw that he, in fact, has not declined offensively.

That only applies to RFAs.
Specifically, RFAs who have the ability to sign an offer sheet.

Kane is a creative offensive player that's an absolute black hole defensively.

On the right team in the right role I think it could work (strong defensive players, sheltered minutes), but I'm honestly not sure Detroit will be that team.

Reuniting with DeBrincat, probably instant chemistry, if they get matched with a good 2-way center.

He's 35 and coming off the same surgery that Nicklas Backstrom had at the same age. You can see how great it went for Backstrom.

I doubt he is going to be great, but depending on the contract it's pretty no risk.

I’m not stating he is going to be great. Just taking exception that his offense was in decline over 8 years. He’s been the picture of consistency in offence.

We all thought he'd be great reunited with Panarin last spring. Nope.

Now he's coming off surgery with a less than stellar record for NHLers who've had it.

I don't expect much. DeBrincat isn't going to revive him either.

I'm sure Kane isn't half the player he was.

But for a cap hit of $2,750,000, he doesn't need to be. He can earn that as a PP specialist.

He was never healthy last year.

Now returning from his surgery is a huge question mark.

But if he can, I expect that the talent is still there.

Yeah the bang for the buck is high here. I just don't see how you can put a negative spin on paying bottom 6 money for his offensive talent and creativity. It's just a matter of sheltering his minutes, limiting him to offensive zone starts, and maximizing him on the powerplay and it should be a win for the Wings.

That tweet mentions "contaminating the locker room" or something to that effect in regards to Patrick Kane - I don't recall hearing that about him. I know there were rape allegations very early in his career, but those charges were dropped I believe... I haven't heard anything else about him in a negative sense... I mean, looking at his face leads me to believe he may be a ###### but I have nothing to back that up.
