In our family, we refer to Rittich as "the good goalie" to keep things simple.

Let's not pile onto Smith. We all know how good he CAN be, when he's on top of his game. He's going through a rough patch. Most players do at some or other point of their careers. He knows he needs to get better. I believe he'll get better.

Very gracious comment, and I really do hope you are right. After his injury last year, he's had a couple stellar games where he showed his best form...but he sure has been fighting it this season overall. While I sympathize, there are a whole bunch of guys on his team who need to rely on him, and when they can't, it messes with the dynamic of the whole team.

But I do hope he can get his MOJO back.

I understand the Flames sticking with the plan cause of the back to back, but if Smith has another bad outing, i think they need to consider changing course and just riding with the hot goalie... play until you lose or look terrible in a win and give the other guy a chance.

I don't care if that's smith or rittich... so far this year, Rittich has played better in the games he has started, so i am inclined to give him more starts, esp if smith continues to struggle.

There's a serious lack of bars around the Shark Tank.

San Jose is no good.

Smith isn't a goalie who's going through a "rough patch" and needs to sort through it, he's a destructive goaltender that's going to cost you games and has no business starting an important game like this. Especially when Rittich is playing as well as he is, and the guys clearly have more confidence in him and play better in front of him. What else does Rittich need to do? If the consensus is "last chance for Smith and then he's done", you should probably just call it now and go with the hot goalie, avoiding a disaster against the main team the Flames are likely going to be contending with to win the Pacific division.

An 11 month, 40+ game rough patch

Problem is, Smith is coming off a serious injury, is 36 years old, AND he's been by-and-large terrible ever since coming back from his injury last year.

So there's a pretty sizeable sample size that says the form he's showing this year is way closer to what he now is at this point of his career and that it's highly unlikely he'll show much better going forward for the rest of this year at all, nevermind bounce back to anywhere close to what he was in his prime.

Not a good idea to bet on Smith at all. Even if he wins tonight, it's a much better idea to bet on Rittich going forward.

I agree with this. Especially, because our options are very limited. In fact, we don't have a lot of viable (and realistic, not a pipe dream) options. So, we do need to hope for Smith to re-gain form asap, rather than simply dismissing him as an old horse that needs to be shot.

Over the last 3 games Smith has played, I find little reason to hold out hope for his return to a stable goalie. but, seems every time I say something like this the opposite happens. So i'll say it for the good of my pool and my favorite hockey team.

Yeah we really don’t know how good Smith can be. What we know is how good he used to be. I’m not giving up all hope but remains to be seen if he can get back to that.

I gotta ask.....how many of you want to see Smith have a great game, providing hope going forward versus how many of you want him to be lit up and pulled, thus essentially confirming that he is no longer a number 1 goalie?

How about Smith hopefully having a great game, then doing his new job as being the #2 goalie for the balance of the rest of the year?

I would rather he shut the Sharks out. Better to have two goalies on game.
