Because Tkachuk’s qualifying offer guarantees he is overpaid?

Also sets a problematic bar for Elias.

Too much money for 5 years I think, but not way too much money.

Yeah this has to be the new low bar for Pettersson…can’t be good for Vancouver

It sure feels like the 2nd contract, after ELC, is quickly becoming a problem....
Vancouver just got quite a bit more uncomfortable seeing this, I'd imagine.

Isn’t it on par? Petterson has not done materially better

I think its perfect term for the Wild, You get him from 24 to 29. Probably the 5 most prime years of his career.
Plus if he doesnt quite pan out you dont have those extra 2 or 3 seasons

Different situations. Petterson is 2 years younger and thus 2 more RFA years. So a 5 year deal would be cheaper. An 7 year deal would be around 9-10.

I bet Petterson would argue he is a more established NHLer

Yup. High end players are getting paid now coming right off ELCs. That's the new reality. Which is perhaps how it should be. It'll mean someone else is getting squeezed - the middle and lower end players.

So him and the buyouts will be 23 million next year or whatever it is?

Ya, 2nd contracts are going up way faster than the cap is its kind of scary for GM's I imagine.
Also probably why there's so many hold outs, Gotta wonder who gave in in this case... or where the goalposts were 2 months ago.

When in doubt, blame Edmonton.

So, Pettersson guaranteed 10 and I guess Tkachuk is getting 9

Because he is.....miles more actually.
This is an absurd contract for a guy with less than a full season on his resume.
Kyle Dubas started this non-sense and collectively the other GM's have decided to follow vs standing their ground.
Ridiculous.

Toronto and Dubas started this trend with the Matthews and Marner contracts.
Edit - Transplant beat me to it
