George Johnson piece on Oliver Kylington "The Price of Freedom"
Quote:
Situated in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Sudan, Ethiop, Djibouti and along on its eastern coastline by the Red Sea, Eritrea is a multi-ethnic country of 10 national languages spoken among its six million inhabitants.
It is a land of diversity, lush topography, abundant wildlife.
Also, sadly, of historical conflict and suppression. The red in its flag represents the blood shed in the fight for freedom and independence.
A fierce border war that would go on to claim tens of thousands of lives was at its height when, well over two decades ago, Teber Zeru made the decision to flee the land of her birth and the military presence of invading Ethiopian forces.
On the way to a waiting car that would be the first step in smuggling her, a sister and friend to Stockholm, Sweden, and sanctuary with a brother who lived and studied there, between the house and the car door, a bullet bit deeply into her arm.
Teber was all of 19 years old.
"When you're a little kid," confesses Oliver Kylington, peeling off gear following Thursday's morning skate at the Scotiabank Saddledome, "and your mom tells you that, maybe you think: 'My mom got shot? That's cool.'

I was super wrong about Kylington, I thought he wouldn’t pan out as an NHL player and that the scouts were right. I figured he didn’t have the toolbox
His play this year has been great and I have no issue with his decision making. I think he reads the pro game fine. Athletic tools are off the charts and I like his attitude too. The weakness in his game is strength which is ideal as it is the easiest weakness to fix in a young player.

Toolbox was never the issue. It was his ability to think the game and develop his skills. Early in his career he made poor decisions with the puck and struggled to think the game. He’s still a high risk/high reward type player and has probably has a higher celing than Rasmus Andersson.

i've been really impressed with Kylington this year... everything I had read suggested that he wasn't really good in the defensive zone when he was drafted...
good on the organization for leaving him in the AHL to work on his game... if anything, i wish he would take a few more chances offensively, as the few times he has, i've been very impressed with his skill level with the puck
great story too... anyways interesting to hear the back stories on players and how they got to the NHL

That's what the toolbox refers to.

No. The "toolbox" in this analogy is the hockey IQ, or the "brain." The "tools" are the skills, physical attributes, or "skillz" in your offering.
Hence the adage: "All the tools and no toolbox."

You guys are a bunch of tools.
I've always liked Buzz, I really hope he's part of the Flames long term.

A few times this season he’s taken a little skate around the offensive zone and generated a nice chance. I’m hoping these are glimpses of a dynamic offensive future.

He still makes bad decisions but his athleticism allows him to correct them. There’s been a few times where he’s turned the puck over but rushed back with his speed and quickness to defend.
If he is able to recover, then he can take chances.
On the other end, Rasmus can’t take those chances cause he can’t recover, so he has to be much more cerebral in his game.
Meanwhile Hanifin and Valimaki has the best of both of them.
Great crop of young defenseman.

Wow, incredible story, thanks for sharing. I tutored a 15 year old girl from Eritrea for a year or so through the Association For New Canadians. We read Goosebumps books for her to practice reading. Her family was so grateful to be here and she was a fantastic student. Newfoundland winters sure took some getting used to, though They moved to Calgary about a year ago, actually, I wonder how they're doing.
