After the first month of the season, a simple of extrapolation of points per game for all teams has the Flames to be on pace for either 95 or 94 points. Finish 3rd in the Pacific behind the Oilers and the Sharks, and be the lowest point total team to qualify for the playoffs in the west.
I assume the black line represents the historical average of what it takes to make it? I'
m sure that's been explained somewhere before, so my apologizes.

That's only if you have no OT losses. If you went 44-33 in the first 77 games and 3-2 in the final 5, you'd be at 94. As long as at least 2 of your losses were in extra time, you'd get to 96.
Since the introduction of the shootout, no team has had fewer than 4 OTL in a season.
Also, in the 12 full seasons since the introduction of the shootout, 29 teams have finished with at least 96 points and no more than 44 wins.

But the point is (correctly) that winning 4/7 games on the season is not enough to make the playoffs. On its own that amounts to only a 91–92-point season, which falls short.

The issue I always had with the 7 game segment idea was how there seemed to be no adjustment when a segment went 1-6-0 or something like that. You can't just move on to the next segment as you've dug a much bigger hole with that record.
Just believe in the snake and look to 96 points overall - it basically factors in everything else, so just watch it march towards it goal.

It's almost as if the season isn't 11.7142857143 seven game series and is actually an 82 game whole, best represented by a single extrapolation of the current pace....
