Yeah I feel like this is a pipe dream design concept anyway, since they will need to purchase all the properties along the river to demolish it which includes a set of low-rise town houses, the daycare that used to be Hard Rock, and Eau Claire Market needs to be demolished.

There has to be a giant cache of nuclear waste under the downtown core that's why they refuse to go underground.

It is underground through downtown.

I can see the town house complex going, and the market is already planned for demolition and redevelopment (hopefully in conjunction with the city and the plan for the green line). And I do think that the small building middle right edge on that rendering is the existing daycare building.

I noticed a sign at the Brentwood Safeway yesterday stating it's closing in May. A quick Google search this morning provided more information about it.

It's becoming a FreshCo? I've never heard of that before.

Makes sense for the Brentwood location, right beside the university so is probably a draw for students who would be more attracted to discount brands.

It’s Sobeys trying to get out of having to pay the higher rates of pay that the unionized Safeway workers make. It’s the exact same scenario as Loblaws opening up No Frills “franchises” instead of Superstores.

^So how does that work for staffing at the renovated locations, get rid of them all and start fresh, or keep them and cut their pay? neither are great options

Probably a combination of both a and b. If I had to guess from what Sobeys has done in other regions when they introduced Freshco is there will likely be severance packages offered to the current employees.
The end result is the same service and prices for the customers, lower pay for the employees, and higher profits for a company that just bought out one their biggest competitors for $5.6B five years ago. But at least they call their frontline workers heroes.

Looks like there's a deal for a new investor to buy the assets and restart already... (presumably post COVID)

The company said the filing will give it time to restructure and sell the business to a new owner and said it has signed an asset purchase agreement with a new shareholder group led by an Alberta private investment firm.

Sounds like a way to re-negotiate leases....

I heard that the London Drugs is shutting down in Sage Hill. That's a bright shiny new store in a newly developed affluent and big area. That one is shocking, especially during covid where I thought their lineup would see higher sales (grocery, electronics, home appliances, etc.).
What happened? They just can't compete with the Walmart across the street?

It’s Calgary’s new front line in the war against Airdrie.

New, yes. But what part of that area is affluent? The entire Sage Hill commercial Centre is surrounded by fields of cheap condos that start in the $190s.

Ok, perhaps affluent is the wrong word. Middle class or even lower middle class but that should be their target market. I looked at the City Market and thought it had more upside and I'm constantly seeing new construction there.
