Given that CSEC and the City of Stockton were operating on a year-to-year lease, coupled with the Heat having the lowest attendance in the league, I don't see a return.

interesting that none of the Canadian AHL teams have their game schedule. Were they anticipating this move, or waiting for Provincial health authorities to give the ok on the leagues Covid plan? Something else?

They are waiting for Ontario's provincial government

While the NHL is not as popular as the big 3 team sports, hockey should still be a big enough draw that minor league teams don’t need to exist in the same city as the big league club.

I hope the NHL sees value in having farm teams in new markets.

If no fans are allowed in the building, then it isn't a market, new or old.

Yes, yes, I know, playing without fans is a temporary emergency measure. So was income tax.

The Sharks recently announced that they'll be playing their first two scheduled home games (Feb. 1 & 3) in Arizona because of restrictions in San Jose.

I assume that means the Barracuda will be a similar situation. So far, they're already scheduled to start their season with three "home games" played in Tucson, followed by a 7 game road trip.

I don’t believe playing with no fans will become permanent. Do you?

Of course not. The league will fold when that happens.

Don't take them away. Just add more flags.
until it looks like the Spengler Cup but with flags.

This is 100% true.

If Winnipeg can have NHL/AHL/WHL/Junior A/U-Sports

Saskatoon & Regina should be able to support AHL/WHL.

I can see the NHL looking at a taxi squad format (similar to that of the NFL) and contracting the AHL into a smaller, strictly developmental league similar to the NBA's G League with split affiliations.

Reading here that the relocated Stockton players may not get a lot of games in.

Quote:
19. I really feel for the AHL, its team and its players. It’s a financial mess and an enormous challenge for everyone involved. Last summer, the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (which represents AHL and ECHL players) agreed to pro-rated salaries for this season. Back then, the league was talking about 56 games with 31 teams. Now we know three are out, and no one will play 56 — with the Canadian teams coming in as low as 24. Ontario has not yet given permission for Belleville or Toronto, and Stockton’s team looks like it’s headed to Calgary. One player said he was looking at the possibility of $30,000 pay for four months work, which he said he couldn’t afford to do.
Maybe the team should loan some of the prospects back to European teams?

The 24 game season has to hurt the AHL-only contracted guys, although I guess some of them could go to the ECHL.

What a mess. The ECHL seems to be getting by. I looked at a few game sheeets and saw 2000 to 3000 fans. A few of the teams opted out but there is some pro hockey being played.

Probably the end of the line for a lot of minor league pros. Sure, they know they'll never make The Show, but nevertheless it's still something they love.

Does this mean that Scortch can come out of hiding?
I think he'd be a great citizen for the city of Calgary.

#Flames have confirmed their AHL team will play in Calgary this season.

The AHL Heat will play at the Scotiabank Saddledome and will follow all NHL Covid protocols.

Great, but who are they playing? And with the Hitmen returning to play in February, the Dome is going to get cramped pretty quick.
