Just look at the SV% of Elliott and Johnson before they came here. Among the goalies available to be signed or traded for that off-season, their numbers were among the best. Weren't they .921 and .920 respectively? Then .880 and .910 under Sigalet.

Elliott certainly slid in Calgary, but slid further in Philadelphia.
Johnson slid a lot again in Buffalo, but played for a brutal team.
Think there are some bad goalies in the mix too, Ramo and Hiller couldn't even find NHL work.
I can't speak to Signalet being a great coach or not, but the evidence suggests Calgary has acquired a lot of iffy goaltenders recently.

Just watched the highlights ...
didn't like goals 3 and 5 for Rittich but was hard to fault in him on 1, 2, and 4. 6 looked like he gave up.
But from the highlights it looks like the team with a backup issue is Edmonton.

Jimmy Howard is still a good goalie, a duo of him & Smith would bring stability.
I wonder what it would cost?

I've wondered the same thing. I get that people aren't crazy about Howard here but he'd be as solid a backup/1B as you could get I'd think. Also the Wings would love to move that salary.
I get that people want to see one of the young guys get the starts and learn on the job but this season seems more important to me than others. That the team not only wants to make the playoffs but needs to. Not the year for anyone to be learning in the net.

I find most teams have drafted only 1 or 2 goalies since 2006 who actually have played more than 25 NHL games.

Helped draft Parsons and discover Rittich. He's a good scout.

I wonder if the Flames can handle two issues in one swap.
Calgary trades Stone to Ottawa for Craig Andersson with the Senators paying $1.5 of his 4.75 contract that has two years remaining.
The deal gives Calgary an archaic tandem, but two of them in case one goes down. The two year deal for Andersson leaves the Flames less exposed in goaltending next year and makes resigning Smith more of an option and less of a necessity.
Big risk is performance as Andersson sagged last year, but then a lot has gone on in this man's life in the last two years.
Stone gives the Senators a brother story, helps their depleted defense, and Calgary can promote Rasmus Andersson to big time.

Anderson did express an interest in being moved earlier this summer. And Ottawa is horrible at trades. This could work. The Flames could even get a pick back.

Ugh the Sigalet talk...
Can we just focus on goalie performance this season? It has almost nothing to do with the goalie coach. At least at this point, he’s here for the year. The goalies are “coached” already, we’re in this.

I would want to see how Rasmus Andersson does in the pre-season at least before trading Stone. Stone also has a 15 team no-trade clause. Normally I would think Ottawa would be on that no-trade list but maybe since his brother plays there it might not be. Who knows.

Maybe but it’s like dating. If all you ever date is train wrecks then eventually you need to realize the common denominator is you.

Heard some encouraging things from a colleague who was sitting at ice level (someone who definitely knows their hockey) about Valimaki. Up close he said Valimaki is "incredible" - in break out passes, decision making, reading plays, etc. Thinks he should make the team now.

Nonsense. My sobbing profusely and 2 am texts/voicemails after they break up with me are all result of their neglect as decent sensible human beings.
Therefore, it's not me. At least that's what my mom says. And I believe her most of all people.

The idea that this is some sort of conspiracy based on him basically keeping his job through blackmail is pretty absurd.
All things being equal they must think he's doing a good job.
He isn't the first guy to survive several regime changes. At one point people were asking the same question of Todd Button.
I have no idea if he's doing a good job or not. I do agree that for the most part its been sh** in sh** out when it comes to Flames tenders.
