Default Junior A Tier 2 Hockey

The Western States Hockey League is expanding to Canada and will be called the Western Provinces Hockey Association.

In 2015 the league was approved to start competing as a Tier II-level player league for a higher calibre of play beginning in the 2015/16 season. Prior to the announcement the only Tier II-level league in the United States was the North American Hockey League. The UHU-sanctioned WSHL operates similar to the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Junior "A" status and continues to charge player tuition to help pay for team travel expenses.

The Canadian Division will consist of 8 teams playing in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia this year and will further expand by 16 teams for 2019/2020 season.

I have purchased the franchise for Edson, AB and we will be hosting a spring camp in Edmonton on May 26th and 27th at the Millwoods Recreation Centre.
Registration is required prior to the camp and is limited to the first 44 players and 6 goaltenders. If you are interested, please email edsonaeros@gmail.com with your name, last club/level played and year, with your position.

Registration cost is $100.00 and may be etransfered or use PayPal to edsonaeros@gmail.com at time of registration.

Your registration fee will cover 4 on ice sessions, practice jersey and lunch.

Qualified players will be invited to our main camp scheduled for the week of August 27-30th in Edson, AB.

The season is 6 pre-season and 54 regular season games. We will also be competing in the Las Vegas Showcase where over 100 scouts from the NCAA, other universities and pro scouts will be in attendance.

Edson is a great community with many offerings including a now regional University campus in town.

Your help in spreading the word is very much appreciated.

Please PM me or contact me through edsonaeros@gmail.com

You can also find us on Facebook at Edson Aeros Junior Hockey Club.

Our website is still being built but currently it is www.aeroshockey.ca

Thank you.

Two things I have learned from all the Jr A team guys I have talked to. Find billet families early (real estate people make great billet coordinators) and get your bus driving license (just in case).

We have a great billet coordinator and families lining up to take in players. Thankfully I have secured a full time bus!!
Thanks for the heads up though. Always good to know stuff!!

Calgary and, I assume, Edmonton, as well as places like grand prairie, have tier 2 already. Will they be in this league? Or competing league?

Up to age 21.
This year it’s Hinton, Edson, Slave Lake, Cold Lake, Meadowlake Lake and Morinville have been confirms. Waiting on some others.

It's an outlaw league. Similar to the Greater Metro Jr A. League in Ontario.

Not sanctioned by Hockey Canada.

AJHL is tier 2. WHL is Tier 1, which is a step above. This will compete against AJHL, BCHL and the SJHL.

Seems that way. Above Junior B but not as good as AJHL. Probably more like BC and Ontario's Jr. B which is a cut above Jr. B in Alberta.

The league is trying to market themselves as above Jr B yet will be harvesting Jr B players to fill out their rosters, so it is actually Jr B. I personally don't get this league and their massive expansion plans, teams from Ft St John BC to ???? It sounds like the Canadian teams will be in their own division entirely but travel will still be rather extreme. Oh and it's typically a pay to play Jr B league with fees ranging in the $5000- $10000/ year, while most teams in leagues such as the KIJHL and the HJHL have no player fees
https://fortsaskonline.com/local/new...coming-to-area

Selling this league as a showcase for NCAA is a bit of a stretch, given that it is literally a third rate Jr league in the USA behind the NAHL and the USHL, leagues where some players are drafted to the NHL while many other kids don't get an NCAA sniff. Same goes for here in Canada as WHL, AJHL and one could argue the local Jr B leagues would even be a higher caliber. There is nothing wrong with Jr B hockey, it is great that kids can keep playing at a high level beyond minor hockey, but to advertise as being "better then JrB" when not e team has played a game yet is false. I think every AB town mentioned for this league has or has recently had Jr B teams, not sure that Edson and Morinville have seen an influx of talented Jr hockey players in the last few years.

Friends kid plays in this league down in Texas they have said some teams are = to HJHL, some better and some worse so their comparison is Jr B competition wise but down in El Paso they draw some wicked crowds. Not sure what the draw would be here for most kids, other then the prestige so many parents covet by paying big money to say there son is playing in Vegas next week end.

What are the fees for players who "make" the team?
Do you have scouts?
GM and Head Coach?
Are cages mandatory or visors allowed? Word is that the HJHL is going to lure some talent out of BC as they have now mandated cages for all their Jr B leagues in the province of BC.

Fees for the players will be $8,000.00USD for the season.
The fees cover some equipment costs.
Players also receive fitness and diet instruction as well as access to a gym.
Video instruction will also form part of their coaching. Players play a 54 game regular season.

Yes we have a General Manager and a Head Coach.
Our Head Coach has 30 years of international Junior A and University hockey coaching experience.
Visors will be allowed in our league.

Well, at least the people organizing your league are smart enough to keep it relatively geographically centred. That will help with costs.

A number of your towns already have Junior B teams though. I am a little surprised that Hinton and Edson didn't have teams in the NWJHL already.

so how does the cost of approximately $10,000 $CAN compare to Jr. B?

What other out of pocket costs would a player be incurring - sticks, equipment, food?
