2018-2019 NCAA Prospects General Discussion Thread
The Flames wiill have 3 NCAA prospects + 1 prospect in the USHL.
Departures: Fox was traded to Carolina.
Fresh is the theme this season for the Flames prospects in the NCAA. All 3 Flames prospects in the NCAA will be freshmen. Coupled with the fact all of them are also late round picks, they are likely going to need the full college experience before they are ready to go pro.
USHL:
C Martin Pospisil 4th round 2018 105th OA : Sioux City Musketeers
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...artin-pospisil
Committed to St. Lawrence University but will be returning to the USHL for another season. Will be interesting to see if he tries to reign in his antics or continues them. Will he go over or under last season's 253PIMs?
NCAA:
LW Demetrois Koumontzis 4th round 2018 108th OA : Arizona State University
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...ios-koumontzis
Koumontzis is joining Arizona State University. ASU's men's hockey program was founded in 2015 and since then hasn't been very good (which isn't surprising for a 2 year old program). He will be the first and only NHL drafted to play for the team. While joining a struggling program in its infancy might not be great for a NHL prospect, it also provides an opportunity for significant ice time and to emerge as a star player.
C Mathias Emilio Pettersen 6th round 2018 167th OA : University of Denver
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...ilio-pettersen
The skilled Norwegian YouTube sensation will be heading to Denver. Denver is going under a restructuring having to replace their coaching staff and their 3 top scorers from last season have gone pro. Unlike ASU, the Denver program has a rich history of success (both in producing NHLers and NCAA championships) as well as a few other NHL draft picks still on the roster.
C Mitchell Mattson 5th round 2016 126th OA : Michigan State University
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...tchell-mattson
A mediocre USHL career even while spending his draft+1 and draft+2 years there. Having to go from a prestigious program like UND to MSU. Not at the latest Flames development camp. All sorts of warning signs. Hope he turns it around as he has all the tools to be a great NHLer - skill and size. MSU should give him a chance to be "the guy".

It will be better for Pospisil when he finally goes to college next year and there is less fighting. He can develop his hockey playing skills more.

Pospisil's coach (or someone else around the draft) mentioned that it took Pospisil half the season to realize that he didn't have to fight every time he wanted to make a point about sticking up for himself and he began playing smarter hockey afterwards. (something along those lines)

I'm confused by the USHL...it says game 1/62 but also that the season doesn't start until October 5th.

That's quite the arena in Arizona. I've been in community rinks with more seats.

The season kicks into full force tonight with all three Flames NCAA prospects in action.
Mattson is in the starting line-up for MSU against Northern Michigan. The game is just underway in East Lansing.
Pettersen will be on Denver's top line as they open their season with a visit to the Air Force at 7:00pm MT. The Denver coaching and management team has a few familiar names on it: Last season's Hitmen head coach, Dallas Ferguson is an Assistant Coach; former-Flame Steven Reinprecht is a "Volunteer Assistant Coach"; and former-Oiler saviour of the day, Ben "Scrivezina" Scrivens is the Team Manager.
Finally, at 8:00pm Calgary time, ASU puts their 2-0 undefeated record on the line against the top-ranked team in the nation as they play host to Ohio State in their shoebox sized arena. Koumontzis had a solid start to his College career last week with 1G and 1A in two games against Alaska.

ASU and MSU both lost their games on Saturday night. Mattson and Koumontzis had no points.
ASU lost 3-0, but held their own pretty well against the top-ranked team in the country. It was scoreless until late in the second and the third goal was an empty-netter.
