Sooo I thought this wasn't allowed in the CBA...

So Stone was due to get paid $3.5M this season.

We bought him out at a hit of ~$1.2M this season and next. Then re-sign him for $700k.

So we end up saving $1.6M this year, to take on a hit of $1.2M next year.

Interesting piece of business.

So they were that desperate to get out of his 3.5m salary? I'm not disappointed because I do think he's a decent defenceman for the bottom end of the lineup, certainly surprised though.

I think getbak cleared this up in one of the many other threads that it only applies to compliance buyouts and this isn't a compliance buyout.

Nothing in the CBA that explicitly forbids it.

Didn't think this was legal. Hopefully no o'Reilly offer sheet scenarios come out of this. If legit we turned stone deal into about 1.8 vs 3.5?

I believe the restriction on signing players after buying them out related to compliance buy-outs, not regular ones. Have not done sufficient research to prove this, but Capfriendly's FAQ seems to be specific to the compliance ones with it:

Well this is a great move imo. This imo allows us to explore brodie deals again.

Stone is a good 3rd pairing guy til valimaki gets back

I suppose they could do this for Frolik as well, unless someone picks him up for more money.
