Interesting Bridge deal.

@KevinWeekes
* BREAKING NEWS*
From what I’m told, @BlueJacketsNHL are close to signing Defenseman
@ZachWerenski to a 15M Deal over 3Years. This would be huge for CBJ securing of the Top young D in the game.
Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
#CBJ have agreed to terms with RFA D Zach Werenski on a three-year, $15 million contract, as first reported by @KevinWeekes.
Deal should be official later today.

I wouldn't mind this as a Tkachuk comparable

The first bridge among the elite RFAs... interested to see who follows suit.
I just don't think this is a particularly good idea unless you think you're a contender. It's just going to cost them far more in the long run, and they get no benefit from the short-term reduced cap hit. This would be a good deal for McAvoy, it's the sort of structure that makes some sense for Marner or Tkachuk, but not here.

sureLoss floated the idea that the cap wouldn't see major bumps in the coming years due to the escrow issue. If that's the case there could be a correction in the RFA market coming. Congrats to the Matthews etc of the NHL who got those deals but they might not be out there anymore.

Great cap-hit but the risk is huge. In three years he will be arbitration eligible, could force a single-one year (likely high-valued) contract and then be UFA at 26. Columbus could have Murray and Savard walk as UFA's in 2021, then Jones walk as UFA in 2022 and finally Werenski walk in 2023. And with losing Panarin and Bobrovsky this off-season, I'm a bit surprised they put themselves in that position but GM won't last to see Werenski walk anyways if the others do.

Well, Marner is going to get one as well.

I really hope the Tkachuk thing gets wrapped up soon. I worry he's not the same player if he misses camp and we miss an opportunity at winning this year.
Let's do three years and win a couple Cups, then deal with 2023's problem at that time.

I don't think this means much for Tkachuk but it could be nice for Flyers and Bruins fans waiting for Provorov and McAvoy to sign

Even though this puts him closer to UFA when the deal is done, I like the shorter term deals from a management perspective.
With the speed of the game these days, there is always so much risk involved in long term contracts. Either the players game slows down and they perform below their contract or they get injured and make fielding a competitive team more difficult. Rarely are players outperforming their contracts by the end of it.
Hockey is starting to become a young mans game and most players are having shorter careers like the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised to see Werenski get another 1-3 year deal after this one and be finished.
It probably would have been in his best interest to sign an 8 year deal instead of gambling on himself 3 years from now.

QO will need to be $7m for CBJ to retain RFA rights when this deal is done.
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Werenski contract breakdown: $4M in Year 1, $4M in Year 2 and most notably $7M in Year 3.

Maybe we see something similar for Tkachuk:
$6.00M in years 1, 2, & 3
$9.00M in year 4
4 Years @ $6.75M AAV
Giordano's contract expires at the end of 2021/22.
Tkachuk becomes the highest paid Flame the following season, 2022/23, @ $9M.
What would his QO need to be at the end of the deal?

I am starting to believe that Tkachuk sign a one year contract, and wait for next year when the Flames will have all the cap they need.
