Tri-City Storm were 2-3 in their pre-season. Sergeev played in 2 of those games and won both.
In the first game, they were outshot 32-17, but won 4-3 in OT
In his second start, they were outshot 31-24, but won 4-2
Seems like a nice start to his pre-season

ASU's season starts two weeks from tonight (Oct. 2) at home against UMass-Lowell: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/sc...izona-State/61

After playing all of last season on the road, it will be the Sun Devils' first home game since February 15, 2020. It will also be their final season in the tiny Oceanside Ice Arena (I've got some oceanfront property in Arizona) before moving into their new 5,000 seat rink next year.

This is Koumontzis's senior year, so he will definitely be playing for a contract.

----------

MSU's season starts in three weeks (Oct. 8) at home against the Air Force: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/sc...higan-State/32

This is Mattson's senior year and the sixth season since he was drafted. It will be Nodler's junior year. I would say at this point, neither of them is likely to see an NHL contract at the end of their NCAA careers.

----------

Notre Dame's season also starts in three weeks (Oct. 9) against Long Island University, which is starting its second season of NCAA Division I hockey: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/sc.../Notre-Dame/43

Boltmann joined the Fighting Irish part way through the season last year and scored no points in 19 games. This will be his Sophomore season.

----------

Harvard will be the team to pay attention to this year. Coronato's draft pedigree is much better than all the rest and is the only one who will almost-certainly play in the NHL.

Harvard's regular season is still over a month away (nerds probably want to study): https://www.collegehockeynews.com/sc...eam/Harvard/22

Don't sleep on Nodler. Really smart two-way player, but in a program that had a rough season last year.

Jim Cummins built up a lot of goodwill over the years but I don’t know how he watched a league with Boltmann and Sean Farrell in it and pushed for that guy over the other

Chris Peters gives his NCAA preview. (unlocked article for a limited time)
https://hockeysense.substack.com/p/m...preview-top-10

He has Harvard at #9 in his NCAA team rankings and Coronato as the 9th best NHL prospect in the NCAA.

Quote:
9. Harvard

Polls: 16/11

NHL Prospects: Matthew Coronato (CGY), Sean Farrell (MTL), Henry Thrun (ANA), Ian Moore (ANA), John Farinacci (ARI), Alex Laferriere (LAK), Mitchell Gibson (WSH), Jack Bar (DAL), John Fusco (TOR), Kyle Aucoin (DET), Nick Abruzzese (TOR), Austin Wong (WPG)

Outlook: After sitting out last season, Harvard sustained some significant losses to their roster, but they’re gaining a lot back with essentially two excellent recruiting classes entering college hockey at the same time. On top of that, they have key returning players including Hobey Hopeful Nick Abruzzese, John Farinacci and Henry Thrun, who each enjoyed good success in their first taste of ECAC hockey two seasons ago.

The big question for me is if Harvard will have the goaltending to battle for a spot in the ECAC, but Mitchell Gibson is a talent. I just wonder how a year off of hockey will impact him as I think the goalies have a longer road back than anyone else. Harvard has good balance among their forwards which will include first-round pick Matt Coronato and USHL MVP Sean Farrell as new additions. On the back end, there’s plenty of talent aside from Thrun, with Ian Moore being a World Junior candidate as a first-year player for the Crimson.

I think their offensive attack should be enough to compete for the ECAC title this year as the league recovers from a season that saw only four teams competing by the end of it.

Earlier this week, MSU announced their captains for the season. Josh Nodler will be wearing an A for the Spartans all season long and Mitch Mattson will be one of 4 rotating A's throughout the season.

https://msuspartans.com/news/2021/9/...-captains.aspx

That's a pretty big honour for Nodler going into his junior (3rd) season.

Quote:
For Nodler, it will be his first time as a Spartan wearing a letter. The junior from Oak Park had a career-best 11 points (3g, 8a) last season and appeared in every game for the second straight year. He was voted the team's rookie of the year in 2020 and won the Amo Bessone Award, honoring athletic and academic achievement and community involvement last season.

Nodler is a 2019 pick (150th overall) of the Calgary Flames.

Sergeev started 2 of 3 Storm games this past week and won both.
2-1 OT win and 4-1 in his second start. Tri City is 3-0 to start the season.

Nikolaev played his first game for the Storm since being returned to the USHL from Flames camp

MSU played an exhibition game on Saturday against the USNTDP U18 team and they were shutout 3-0. Nodler and Mattson both played in the game, but obviously didn't have any points.

ASU played their home opener against UMass-Lowell. It was a close game until UMass took a major penalty with just over 5 minutes left in the game. ASU scored twice on the PP and won the game 5-3. Koumontzis did not have any points in the game.

The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon.

Sergeev with his third start of the season, gets a 23 save shutout for a 3-0 win, and a 3-0 record

Nikolaev played in his third game as well, and got an assist for his first point of the season

This weekend in the NCAA...

MSU:
Friday, 3-2 overtime loss to Air Force. Nodler, 1 goal. Mattson, no points.
Saturday, 5-1 win over Air Force. Nodler, 2 assists. Mattson didn't play.

ASU:
Friday, 8-3 loss to Denver. Saturday, 4-3 loss to Denver. Koumontzis had no points in either game and is the only forward on the team who has played in all 4 of their games who has not scored a point yet.

Notre Dame:
Saturday, the Irish opened their season with a 5-2 win over Long Island. Boltmann had one assist, which was his first NCAA point, in his 20th career game.

Should we be as excited about Sergeev as we were about Chechelev?

Good weekend in the NCAA:
  • MSU hosted Miami for 2 games, winning 3-1 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday. Nodler had one assist in Saturday's game. Mattson didn't play in either game.

  • ASU hosted New Hampshire for 2 games, winning both 5-1. Koumontzis had 2 goals in Friday's game and no points on Saturday.

  • Notre Dame had 2 road wins, 2-1 (OT) at Michigan Tech on Friday and 5-2 at Northern Michigan on Saturday. Boltmann had an assist on Saturday.

Harvard's season still doesn't start for another 2 weeks, but it looks like they played a preseason game against Dartmouth on Saturday. They won the game 4-0 and Coronato had one assist.

Just noticed that Boltmann has 3pts in 5 games, +3, 8 PIM. Not bad, hopefully he can keep it up.
