Opening day is getting closer, so let's go this thread started.

Tough news for the Mets. Diaz out for the season.

Are we going to have a separate one for the Jays or this year we leave it in one thread?

It's best to have one for the Jays on its own.

ESPN ranks all 30 teams.

Jays land in 8th spot.

Seems to be about right (the top 10 or so). Jays are a bit experimental to me, so I do have questions, but 8th makes sense.

Interesting tidbit:
One (realistic) bold prediction: New outfielder Varsho goes 30-30, joining Shawn Green and Jose Cruz Jr. as the only Blue Jays to do it. Realistic after 27 home runs and 16 steals last year for Arizona? Look for Varsho's average and OBP to go up without the shift, giving him more opportunities to run.

can't an umpire rescind his ejection? that would have been a much bigger deal if it was a real game.

I suppose the Ohtani watch will be one of the biggest things to watch during the season. Does he get traded, and where to.

The answer is San Diego. Always San Diego.

Oh, no doubt. I can't imagine the Yankees increasing payroll that high but you'd think they'd fight hand and nail to get there. After his WBC play, his value/allure has gone up dramatically. Personally, I'd offer him as much as $45M, but it wouldn't be beyond 6 years. I can't imagine he'd be able to do both pitching and batting from a longevity perspective. Certainly the most unique player in the league.

The number will start with a 5 and maybe a 6 and contain 8 zeros

We will see. At some point he’ll probably have to give up pitching and that day that contract becomes tough ti swallow at those prices. Will be very interesting to see how it plays out. Still a full season to go.

iirc he originally signed with the Angels because they're on the west coast and closer to home. Wonder if that would still be the case with whoever he signs with next year.

Dodgers
Padres
Giants
Seattle (doubt they would pony up that kinda cash)

The Giants have tried to throw a tonne of cash at a couple guys (Judge and Correa) so it wouldn't surprise me if they had a good run at him.

You have to remember how much Ohtani means for off the field revenue. So $500 million sounds insane, but in the right market (Dodgers and New York basically) he could be worth a significant amount of that $500 million in off the field revenue. And there's no doubt Cohen will offer whatever it takes, even if it's $600 million and gutting their entire farm system.

So should the Angels trade him now to get the best value/ I know trade don't usually happen on opening day.

They gotta at least try and see if they can not suck this year before trading him. Although I remain unsure if Trout would ever try to force his way out, once Ohtani is gone that would at least be the biggest thing that could see Trout try and leave.

That team has been so mediocre for so long. I’m surprised both guys have been patient with them. For a team that has two of the biggest generational talents maybe ever, and they suck so bad at evaluating talent that they’ve been so mediocre for so long, it’s crazy that ownership has any patience with management at all. You’d think they’d try and come up with a plan but every signing they seem to ever make falls flat.

Pretty sure part of the problem with the Angels is that ownership pushes a lot of the decisions. Hard to blame management when you're part of it.
