After several months of back and forth to the vet with what started as a bad kidney infection it seems these might be the last days for my cat Izzy. They diagnosed the start of renal failure but she was doing relatively well until the last few days and today has been the worst. I think it’s going to be time to let her go. She’s only 11, it is actually the 11 year anniversary today of when I adopted her. This really sucks. However this morning watching her struggling to walk and refusing to eat or drink has been awful.

I feel for you tmac. My parents got a cat in my early teens, and she quickly became "my" cat. She had fatty liver disease and died at age 11. The last week was incredibly rough, as she struggled to walk and I had to force-feed her food and meds. I remember only a few days before she died she was in rough shape, and to calm her down I picked her up, laying down on the couch and laying her on my chest—as she had done on her own hundreds of times before but no longer could—and she purred away... while I broke down and cried.
I felt like I should have seen the signs she was sick much earlier, and failed her as an owner. I've never owned another pet ever since.
Don't blame yourself, like I did.

I'm currently thinking about end-of-life decisions for my cardigan corgi, who's now 16. He's lost a lot of his sight and hearing, some of his mobility, and probably has dementia as he spends a lot of time turning in circles. It's hard to say if there's still anything that he gets joy from, but because he also doesn't seem to be in discomfort, I'm not sure how to weigh that. He's also not a particularly vocal or demonstrative dog and I do worry that if he was in discomfort, he wouldn't display it. For now we'll carry on as we are now, but I have trouble determining at what point we should take action.

They will hide their pain from you, it’s a dog’s natural instinct. We didn’t know our GSD had any issues until she couldn’t lay on her side, lung cancer… You will know when it’s time

Izzy was put to sleep peacefully yesterday morning. She was too young and I will miss her dearly. She was the softest, cuddliest pretty girl.
Cannot seem to figure out how to post a picture unfortunately.

Thanks everyone. It was a really tough decision and I am really going to miss him. He was SUCH a big dope; very much like his namesake (the dragon in How to Train Your Dragon).
